If it's a metal-on-metal screeching noise that only happens when you brake, it's probably the wear indicators on the pads, yes.

Take it in as soon as possible. You don't want to damage your rotors.

I kept driving for oh, a week after I heard the wear indicator. Chewed up two rotors in the process wihout even realizing it.

4-5 years ago? How many miles are on the car? Either someone drove the absolute crap out of it the first few years of its life, or it still has the stock pads on it.

If you feel any grinding when braking, get them fixed immediately before you have to replace all your rotors on top of it.

New pads at least. If the rotors are still good there's no need to replace them, though it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get them checked and/or turned perhaps. Don't let it go though - the longer you wait the more chance of doing more damage there is.

It could turn a 350 dollar brake job into a 8-900 one.

You're probably good as long as you don't hear/feel any crunching sounds. But better safe than sorry. take it in asap.

that's the thing about car repairs. They don't get better or fix themselves...only get worse and more expensive.

You might want to try something, if you haven't felt any grinding from the brakes, as my car squeals like a bastard and it's six months old, 22,000 miles. They've been inspected, and apparently it's a build-up of brake dust forming into tiny hard lumps on the brake pads (yeah, I know, I was like  too). They recommended using a pressure washer on the brakes, thirty seconds per wheel.

So, off I trundled to the nearest garage (gas station), find the self-wash apparatus, poke the nozzle through the holes in the wheels (vent holes?) and am :Q at the amount of black water pouring out. Repeated on the rear of the wheels for good measure.

Squealing's gone.

2nd, you don't want to put oil on your brakes.

Use grease instead.

Oh my God. By this point, there are people hoping that it's not COMPLETLEY OBVIOUS to you and that you die in a horrible accident b/c you have no brakes!
