Heres the deal, Im an undergraduate college student, should be graduating in 1.5 to 2 years. I had a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport....hit a tree. Right now, I drive one of my parents cars. No big deal, however, Im thinking about buying a used car that will work for the next two years. Theres no sense in buying a new car now when I'll be purchasing one in two years. Heres what I would like.....
*Something reliable.
*Something for I can buy for $1500.
I know $1500 wont get me much, but Im not looking for much except for used car that will run for 2 more years.
I like 5 spd manual, I like sunroofs, I like AWD........but they're not required.

Any suggestions...? Thanks.

90-94 Eclipse GSX, Laser RS or Talon TSi AWD

I can find a used one for $1500? And they're reliable, considering they're sports cars and their previous owners probably pushed the sh*t out of them..?

just got a 92 TSi AWD in november for 1,800 but it had a brand new paint job... and they're as reliable as you make them. you take care of it, it takes care of you. you neglect it and it'll make you regret buying it.

Not likely, and no.

You should be looking at things like Corollas, Tercels, Civics, and maybe Accords.

As for the new car after college, do it if you want - It's an indisputably poor financial choice, however.

92-95 Honda Civic, manual. You could beat the hell out of it seven days a week for those next two years and it'll still be in good enough shape to get you a few hundred bucks back when you graduate. Cheap on gas too. :)

Agree

Buying a new car period is not the best of ideas unless you are financially secure and can pay all or most up front.

some may disagree but come on, what's the sense in losing thousands of dollars the moment you drive it off the lot?

Definitely a bad choice. These are NOT reliable cars, especially for $1500.

A 2.2l/2.5l dodge/chrysler/plymouth of some kind. They aren't honda reliable but the cars are wothless so you can get one a lot less miles then a honda for under $1500 bucks. I would rather have a dodge with 90k miles then a honda with 200k miles. Parts are dirt cheap, easy to work on, and they are all over the place. A 3.0l v6 one wouldn't be bad either but do not get one with a 4 speed auto. The 3 speed autos and 5 speed manuals are fine but the 4 speed is a huge POS. The turbo models are fun and can be pretty damn fast but reliablity will go down.

anything volvo.

I am a fan of the 240, they stopped making them in '92, but extremely reliable cars, the mileage can be 300k on them and they will run great. I just got a '91 240 for 1000 bucks, (1300 after egistration and tax), and it needed no work, and is an amazing car. Of course, my dad knows people and volvos grow on trees in VT. The book value on it is 3k, but volvo is the the best bang-for-your-buck-reliable car. If not that a honda. Both are known for reliability and being cheap, but parts are rather expensive when they break

92-94 Nissan Sentra <- truly the best bang-for-your-buck reliable car
Chevy Prizm (actually a Toyota Corrola)

I was actually looking at used Saturns. I've seen plenty on EBAY "Buy it now" for $1500....all with 150K or less miles.....and all above 1993.

yep. Bought my '92 5-spd w/ 173k on it almost 2 years ago for $1k, and the only thing I had to fix was a cv joint for $160. Dead reliable, relatively fun to drive, and AWESOME gas mileage. In fact, I still get ~40 mpg on the highway with over 200,000 miles on the odometer. If you can find one for 1.5k, snag it.

I just got a car sunday. And it has everthing in your specifications except AWD. And I only paid (well my dad did) $750 then the extra $100 for all the tax and title transfer and plates crap. You shouldnt have a problem finding a car like that for $1500.
