My sister has absolutely no friggin idea how to do anything to her car. But for some reason, she has convinced herself that her oil is low. No reason, she "just knows". Of course, last time I interacted with her and a car needing oil was when her 1990 Tempo was 2 quarts low... and she didnt notice the noise it was making. But she is freaking out, and doesnt want to drive it.

Anyway, I told her to pop the hood, look for the most obvious, usually yellow, dipstick, and pull it out, wipe it, etc. She says she doesnt see any dipstick. And yes, I have described one to her. This is on a 98 or 99 (IIRC) Civic LX. I either need an actual picture I can send to her or a detailed description... written for a car idiot (ie, to the left of that biggest chunk of metal, which some call an "engine", ...). The alternative is driving across town to check, something I really dont want to do.

Just took the picture.

God, I'm going to smack her silly if that red one is the oil dipstick (it seems to me every oil dipstick I have pulled is yellow). Hell, even if it isnt, she told me she couldnt see ANY dipstick.

Thanks for the pic, btw.

EDIT: saved the picture, sending email now.

If you think thats bad you should have HEARD the Ford Tempo running a full 2 quarts low... I asked her how long it had been making that noise and she said "what noise"?

At least she doesn't claim to be an expert. I know a guy who had a 92 Civic DX hatchback. Of course he thought it was fast. He also thought he knew more about cars than anyone else. Always talked big and talked about everything as if he was knowledgable. Well being the genius he is, he ran the car out of oil completely without knowing it. There was NO OIL left. He managed to make it to my place where he needed to be shown how to check his oil! Imagine that!

No kidding. If you lived two states away from your sister like I do I could see the problem, but just drive over and do it for her.

Everytime I see a thread like this is supports my argument that women should not be allowed to drive. Or to have the remote control. Or use the computer. Well, they can use the computer but allrecipies.com is the only page they can access.

Some of us don't live in small cities. Hell, I don't live in a big city/town by any means, but it takes at least 30 minutes to go from one end to the other.

Imagine living in Chicago.

I live on the west side of Cleveland. My sister's place is on the east side. Its at least 25 minutes if I speed.

Plus, going over for stupid sh!t makes her think I am available for this 24/7. My sister once had a tire that she suddenly noticed was flat. She pulled into a gas station, and called me. I come out, 30 minutes each way, in the middle of a snowstorm, and find that right next to her car is a air pump. Has she tried to fill her tire? Nooooooo... that would be not pulling the "I'm helpless... save me someone!" routine. I filled the tire, watched it for 10 minutes... it looked the same. Two days later when she finally got it patched, it was still driveable, though slightly low. I'm trying to wean her off the call-the-brother-over-for-killing-spiders-and-other-BS habit.

Its not that my sister is technologically retarded, she is not. Instead, once she thinks there is something wrong, and convinces herself there isnt anything she can do, she frigging freaks out. Its annoying as hell, and I pity her fiancee. Well, technically they havent announced being engaged, but they are showing all the signs of it... I expect an announcement right after he finishes the first year of law school (ie, in 6 months or so).

When I say "showing signs", I mean things like my sister's year lease was ending, and she suddenly showed interest in getting a house rather than renewing. She wouldnt even look at houses without her b/f, though... and she's tried to keep that a secret.

Alright, I'm done rambling
