YACT: Hyundai XG350...opinions?

Didn't realize Hyundai had a car like this that is, I guess, slotted between, say, an Accord and an Acura CL? Or maybe just closer to the Accord?

It got good consumer reviews at edmunds.com and looks, to me, like a Mitsubishi Diamante.

<shrug>

Just thinking aloud....

It's just the red-headed stepchild of the auto industry. That doesn't mean it's bad....only no one wants it.

I was definitely impressed with my exgf's 2002 Sonata. It was loaded with features for $22k. Very smooth, quiet ride too... I personally would have regret in owning one, but give me a few years.

Rented one before it rides nice and has very nice standard features. I wish I could afford to buy one right now but I'm looking at getting a Corolla or Sonata right now.

Don't listen to those that bash Hyundai there is nothing wrong with owning one there have been many satisfied and happy Hyundai owners that trade in for another Hyundai.

And you base this on?

Like everyone else has said... I wouldn't sink $24k (base price) into a Hyundai. As far as the car itself, it's ok, the trunk looks like an ass. Not the nicest car out there by any means for the money.

i dont think id buy a hyundai/kia for more than about 15k, i cant see spending that much on either brand.

Well...I'm in a position of not being able to be picky about my next automotive purchase. I have a friend that works in finance for a Hyundai dealer and another friend used to be a salesman there. They have a used 2002 XG350 for $16995 (and you figure they could come down a fair bit on that). Might consider it since I will, most likely, lose my car here in a few weeks. :frown:

Maybe it's just me, but I feel that Kia is worse than Hyundai. I'm sure they make decent vehicles, but the Kia emblem just doesn't appeal to me. Hyundai is really trying to find a place in the market and I think they are doing a great job making decent vehicles. I'm just curious as to how long the engines/interiors will hold out. Even if they are quality vehicles, you may not be able to tell for 5+ years....looks can be very deceiving when it comes to materials and how weathering/wear and tear affects them.

Yeah...that's why I was kind of surprised at the positve reviews at edmunds by actual consumers. My sister owned an Elantra several years ago and never had a problem with it and I've talked to others with similar responses. Curiously, not much bad has ever been said. Now, my Chrysler Sebring convertible I'm about to lose, probably...well...won't really miss it...definitely my last domestic make. (well, I will miss putting the top down, esp. on gorgeous days like today!)

Just wondering, what year is your Sebring and what's happening to it? Is it failing mechanically?

BTW, Hyundai is still basically trying to recover from the negative image they created when they first started selling cars in the U.S. in the late 80's. Their cars were crap. I owned an '89 Sonata and it was junk.

Most of their new vehicles are light-years better... not as good as the class-leaders, but definitely competitive when you factor in price.

It's a '96 JX (4-cyl.)

Well, at 68k miles had to have a rebuilt engine put in (luckily covered by extended warranty). At 96k miles the transmission needed to be rebuilt. At 120k miles the tie rod ends were replaced. At 130k miles the head gasket was replaced to correct an oil leak and overheating problem. At 135k miles the transmisison began leaking again and had to have that repaired. Now, at 145k miles, the EGR valve needs to be replaced. The top is tearing at the seams. The windows roll up/down very noisily (and have for years). The A/C compressor is on its last legs and I'm lucky it even works at all according to the mechanic. The outside air/recirculation dial on the dash is broken. Radio failed (but that gave me an excuse to buy a CD deck that plays MP3s 🙂 ).
