Hmmmm, perhaps your thinking of some non-intercooled turbos like early Saab 900's. Even with them, it wasn't the turbine housings that cracked, it was, IIRC, the still hot bearings of the turbo "cooking" the oil routed through that left a sludge that, with repeated buildup, caused the bearings to seize.
