YACT: How much to get axle boot fixed?

Took my car in for an oil change today..yes I'm not a manly man and don't want to get my hands dirty 😛

The guy told me then that the boot where on the axle of the wheel was cracking..and that I needed to get it fixed. He gave me a quote of $140..good deal?

it'll be cheaper to replace the whole axel.

I would not get the boot replaced. It is usually not much more to just replace the whole axle. Also if you replace the boot, the axle could still go at any time.
So I would do this, drive it until the cv joint starts clicking loudly around sharp corners. This could take months or years. It is safe and the axle will not just break one day. It takes weeks-months to break from the time you hear the clicking. Then I would pay to have the axle replaced.
To help extend the life of the cv joint you could use some good quality silicone to patch up the boot. The cv boot serves no purpose other than to keep the joint clean.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Gawd, if it's just cracking you ought to be able to just coat it with some kind of silicone goop or something. What a pain. For a rear wheel drive car, you could get a U-Joint for about $7.50... and it doesn't need a cute little booty on it at all!

wow...the front right axle on my parents '93 maxima is bad, and goodyear and firestone both want $300 to fix it...the nissan dealer wants $650..

Think replacing an axle can be done by a n00b? (i just changed the oil myself 3-4 days ago, for the very first time! 😛) ... i'm just kinda paranoid, I don't want the thing to suddenly break off as i'm cruising at 70mph..
