Except the timing belt. One belt is screeching in my car and it's slowly screeching more and more. How much do you think a mechanic will charge for changing it plus cost of belt?? It's in a Mitsubishi Galant '97.

I'm an car idiot. I don't want to risk blowing anything if the belt is not on properly. This is an option though.

are you talking like a serpentine belt? the one that runs your ac/powerstering/etc?
You can go to like a jiffy lube and get it done for around $80-90...
its not as easy as said though cause if u dont got the right amount of torque on some of those belts it can cause problemos :p

usually on japanese cars it's not as simple as doing it in the parking lot.

Yes sir, I believe it's the serpentine belt. There are three different belts though. I was told that I need to remove some parts in order to change it That's why I dare not attempt it.

serpentine belt usually turns all the accessories. you probably just have V belts and such.

Then I'm wrong. I looked up advance autoparts for the belts and it was written as serpentine belts. :D Would it be more expensive to do so if it's V belt??

Firestone charges 135 bucks to change all 3 belts. :(

A friend is charging me 20 bucks + cost of parts but I'm not sure if he will do it right. Are there any other things I need to look out for or should I just go with a mechanic?

I shall go to the devil of all repair outlets.....pepboys. :D 86 bucks to change it all.

If you're worried about doing it yourself, head to your local Autozone (or your local library) and find the Haynes repair manual for your make and model. It'll give pretty explict instructions about how to remove the old belts, how to install the new belts and how to adjust the belt tensioners. It'll be a pretty short section so you might not even bother buying the book. Just read it and remember :)

autozone has the following parts for your vehicle:
KELLY_SPRINGFIELD
A/C 372K4 $7.49

KELLY_SPRINGFIELD
ALTERNATOR 385K4 $6.49

KELLY_SPRINGFIELD
POWER STEERING 275K4 $7.99

(double check with them)
so for about 22 bucks in parts, + 20 bucks for your friend, I would opt for your friend who could probably teach you in the process. In any event, even if you opt for the large repair shop replacement, i seriously doubt they would do anything different than what you friend would do (i.e, not hook up a belt tension gauge and test tension.) I think they would eyeball it based on their experience. Hell, most large repair shops have a history of forgetting oil drain plugs, over-torqueing wheel nuts, and not doing the work. (just do a search ). In any event, are you sure its the belt and not the part that is being rotated?
