YACT: How much does it cost to replace a slave cylinder?

My car's been leaking slave cylinder (aka brake) fluid like crazy, and now it's very difficult to get it to move in reverse or forward sometimes. I'm 95% sure this is an issue with the slave cylinder being broken/having a leak. How much will it cost to have it replaced? This is a 1996 Saturn SC2.

Slave cylinder like for a clutch???

I would guess 6 hours labor,
and $180 for the part.

Nope way more.......... $200 for the part,at a Parts America store,
so a Mechanic will prob charge twice that.

Any slave cylinder I have ever seen go bad died all at once. There was never any prior warning, just lost the clutch totally. That being said, all the ones I have changed is a easy job. usually 2 or 3 bolts and a brake fitting and bleeding.

Thats retarded, when I last changed one it was like $50. Think that was on a 86 Nissan Hardbody.
 
I'm not sure what's happening.. it's leaking fluid so badly that I can see it in the rain water on the ground, trailing behind me. I can also only reverse about 3 feet, before the car just stops. It doesn't stall out, but just won't go backwards any more. Now, when going forward, it also sometimes chokes for a second and skips a beat.

That dosn't sound like a slave to me unless it works different than what I have seen. The slave is just a mini piston that pushes on the clutch fork. The pushing actually disengages the clutch so I don't know why it would stop the car from moving.
 
I agree with AV. Replacing a slave cylinder is pretty straightforward, especially if you have a repair manual (Haynes, etc).

Last time i replaced one, I had originally replaced the master cylinder in an 83 RX7. For some reason I didn't think to check the slave. Everything seemed to work fine for a couple miles but I guess the increased pressure created by the new master cylinder caused the slave to finally fail. So I was stuck in 2nd gear. At a stop light. Good thing I wasn't in 4th or 5th or I'd have had to tow it home.

So while you have things broken down, go ahead and check the master cylinder for pits and replace it, too, if necessary.

 
Well, found out today what it was. Something in the transmission broke, and basically blew out the side of the transmission. All of the fluid leaked out, and the transmission basically killed itself.
