YACT: How much do most muffler replacements cost?

Well i just got back from midas to get a estimate for my muffler to get replaced on my 94 honda civic.
I need the muffler replaced ( the exhaust pipe, clamps, and gasket need to be replaced to as well).

The told me that it would $300 to get my muffler replaced on my 94 honda civic. My friend with a civic only paid $80 to get his replaced. Any suggestions would be great, i have an appointment at another place tomorrow morning.

on my 82 accord they had to replace a couple feet of pipe, muffler and tip. it cost less than 80 bucks iirc. unless you are doing the entire exhaust system, full catback, then it shouldn't cost that much. unless you want a performance muffler, which really wouldn't do much except lower back pressure on your system, not a helpful thing imho

He showed me what i needed replaced and it was just the muffler to the exhaust tip (i dont know alot about cars).
I just want the cheapest deal...

cheapest? go find yourself a cherry bomb, those suckers are hella cheap. and shop around, midas can really overcharge you. if you have a bucky's in your area call em, that is where i got mine done at

muffler replacement is easy. if you can do it yourself, and it's after the catalytic converter, then it's just remove and bolt back on. you just have to get the parts.

dunno how much they charge, my friend and i normally do it ourselves.

Just go buy the muffler and find a mechanic to do it for you. Shouldn't cost more than 40-50 bucks in labor im guessing.

But getting it off is the hardest part.
If it's an old car with severe rust, that bad boy ain't coming off unless you torch it.

find a "muffler shop" in the phone book. here it's seeburg mufflers. all the other mechanic shops send their customers there for exhaust because it's all they do. they are hella quick and cheap. i went in because i thought my muffler had a hole in it. turns out a flange to the muffler just got rusted out. guy came and told me he could replace the muffler, but it was in decent shape so he could just splice the rusted part. ended up costing $15.

I called a buckys about a half hour away and they have a special for 39.99 for muffler and installed (little extra for small parts....).

Looks like midas was trying to do me over...

Bucky's a damn crook. They use 3 dollar mufflers!

Avoid that place like the plague if you can help it.

On the flip side his brother Walt had a decent business, to bad he sold.

My 91 CRX it was one of three mufflers,so of course mine was the most expensive.

🙁 like $350-$450 for muffler and a small section of pipe.

Waah

3 dollar mufflers? wasnt he lookin for cheap mufflers? and the muffler on my car is not 3 dollars. Walts is good, havn't been there in awhile though.

oh, and if you dont pay attention to details, all mechanics are crooks looking for money.

don't skimp on muffler bearings...otherwise, you will just end up replacing the system in another year.

-=bmacd=-

WTF, I've never heard such high prices for a simple exhaust system! No way I'm doing it myself, because the parts cost almost as much as I can get it done for. That's about a buck and a half for exhaust, muffler and tail pipes from the cats back on full sized Fords, using Maremont parts.

No way in hell would I pay $300 for just the muffler plus labor.

There are tons of mom and pop type muffler repair places in NYC that would do that kinda job for about $100.

It really burns my chaps to think that we were about to just say F it and pay the money. Im glad im waiting.

When I moved here my car wouldnt pass smog. The manager at Buckies said hed put a new cat on it , give me a reciept and if it didnt pass they would accept the reciept to give me an exemption. He lied. Bucky's wasnt even certified to do emissions work. That pretty much makes them crooks. I fought with Bucky on the phone like 10 times over that.

On the same car they had broken a bolt and wanted a shop charge to fix the thing. I took it to Walt's ( before I knew they were related) and they were really cool. They extracted the bolt and fixed the leak free of charge.
