Wife's car is a 92 Passat GL 4cyl Automatic (pos). There is an absurd amount of vibration, hard shifting and a few other symptoms of bad engine mounts. Does anyone have any personal experience in changing the engine/transmission mounts in a car? I'm fairly comfortable doing just about anything in a car, but don't have a ton of time to devote to it. Can it be done easily without any special tools?

IIRC, you're going to need an engine lift to change the mounts Beau.

yeah probably... my guess is if there are 3 engine mounts, 2 of them should be relatively easy to change. the lower mount/mounts are probably more of a hassle.

There's 2 engine mounts, an engine stabilizer and a tranny mount.

It's pretty simple, difficulty probably depends on how hard it is to access the mounts. My brother and I did it to our uncle's integra about 3 months ago, it was pretty simple because there is so much room in the bay.

I've changed the torque axis mount (passenger side of engine) and the transmission mount (front of engine) on a front wheel drive car before. Neither of these were hard at all. Just jack up on the engine using a 2x4 or other piece of wood to spread the force out. Then just unbolt the mount and remove the bolt that goes through the rubber part of the mount, and replace. Becareful where you jack on the engine, and make sure you use a piece of wood to spread the force out so you don't damage the oil pan.

thanks guys.. I think I'll brave it. The tranny mount for this POS is $105 for the part alone (because it's a proprietary part for their heavy-ass auto tranny... if it was a manual tranny, it'd be $26). So I'd like to do it myself and save the $$.

I am not sure on the VW (I can't remember my VR6's mount system)....but on my saturn the top mount is just 5 bolts and the two lower are 2 bolts each....you just use a floor jack to keep the engine from settling. Took me about 1 hour to do all three.
