I have a 92 5.0 Mustang, that is primarily stock cept for headers, exhaust, and cold air induction unit.

I want to exchange the camshaft and need to know a good replacement for the stock one.

What will fit, and are hydralic roller lifters suitable, and roller rocker arms (what ratio?)?
Will I have to add a spacer to my intake for clearance for the rocker arms.

Any tips, pointers or problems that I may need/encounter would be helpful.

Thanks,
Josh

It's been a few years since I had a 5.0L Mustang, so I would ask Notfred or Ronstang for advice.

The new camshaft is going in the same place as the existing one, so I see no need to add spacers to anything.

I wouldn't bother changing cams without changing heads and intake at the same time, as you'll notice a lot more gain from the cam when combined with the other mods. But, if you want to do it anyway, there are about a million different cams out there. The E cam (Ford Motorsport E-303) is popular, but there a bunch of otheres out there too that you might look at depending on what else you plan on doing to the car. For instance, if you're planning on putting Edelbrock heads and intake on the car in the future, you may very well want to look into a matching edelbrock camshaft, too.

You're only going to need a spacer for the intake if you put taller than stock valve covers on the car (even then, you may or may not need the spacer, depending on how much taller the valve covers are). My Trick Flow roller rockers fit under the stock valve covers with a few modifications (had to remove the oil baffle inside the passenger's side valve cover). Mosr roller rockers are about the same size, so you can grind off that baffle, or get taller valve covers.

If you're just replacing the cam, I see no need to replace the lifters. The stock ones are hydrolic and pretty much the same as anything else you're going to put in there. Depending on what heads, pistons, and cam you're using, you might want to use 1.6 or 1.7 roller rockers. I'm using 1.7s on a stock cam. If you have really big valves and an aggressive cam, you could run into clearance problems with 1.7s.

Notfred pretty much covered it. I was also going to suggest an E-303 camshaft from Ford as it is a very good overall camshaft that does well in a host of situations. I have used this cam quite a few times with good results, hell I have 2 maybe 3 of them in the garage right now. If you combine it with a good set of heads, a good intake, an upgraded exhaust, and 3.73 gears out back low 13 second ETs are easy on street tires. I once made 505 RWHP on an blower Mustang running an E-303.

Like notfred said also, you do not need to replace the stock lifters since they are roller lifters and the hardened rollers do not suffer from the wear patterns common to flat tappet camshaft/lifter combos.

You will notice a little gain from a cam swap but I would also suggest you look into heads/intake/exhaust also if you really want some gains. These days there is a lot of used stuff on the market and you could put a nice little package together for a reasonable amount of money. I have a brand new set of Twisted Wedge 2.02 heads in the garage I basically got for free after I sold off the other stuff that came in a package deal from some kid in the neighborhood.

Comp's Extreme Energy cams seem to be popular too, but i agree that a new set of heads are in order as well.

anyone have a set of heads/cams for a 4.6 they wanna send me? Sometimes i curse ford for giving me a mod motor with little to no aftermarket, instead of the good ol five-oh :|

Throw a blower on it.....easiest path to performance on the mod motor.

Thanks guys, Im working on a slightly limited budget so heads are going to have to wait ATM, Im in the process or replacing the power steering pump and the water pump which both crapped out on me at the same time, so while I was in there Im going to tear it apart a little farther and throw a new timing chain in there so i figured I might as well dig just a little deeper and put a new cam in there....

this isnt a do it all at once car for me its a slow step by step..........

If you want an E-303 cam check what prices you can get it for. I have a wholesale account at Tommie Vaughn Ford here in Houston and I get Motorsports stuff pretty cheap. If the shipping doesn't eat the difference I'll get you the cam.

The cheapest it looks like I can get that cam for would be around 170 or so shipped :-/, Thats not looking around a whole lot though, but that is from summit who is most likely the place I would have ordered from....

So if I get this cam I should keep the stock lifters? you dont think they may have mushroomed out (my dad mentioned something about this...),also keep the stock rocker arms?

Thanks, and LMK what you can get it for and I will get back to you.

Josh,

Roller lifters don't mushroom. They have hardened rollers on the bottom that ride on the cam lobe and they really don't wear much at all. I have re-used lifters with 100K miles on them on a new cam with no problems at all.

I haven't checked the price on these camshafts in a while, I will call tomorrow and see what my price is.
