I took my car to 80,000 mile service on friday. When I was filling up the form for service, I checked full synthetic oil for them to use. Well, they were done in 2 hours, I paid for service and left the dealership. After driving my car fro 7 miles, I got caught in traffic lights. While I was looking at the service record, I saw that the fvckin technician used regular 10/50W Castrol GTX :| Oh gosh I was pissed. So I immediately called the dealership to verify this and they confirmed. Well I asked them wtf they were thinking because I specified that I wanted them to use synthetic oil. The manager apologized but said they couldn't change my oil now as it was past 5 o'clock and all the technicians have left! :| He said they will flush it and put synthetic oil on monday :( Well I didn't want to drive my car like that as I always used synthetic oil, so I took my car to NTB and got it flushed & put synthetic oil in. Cost me $75 total but the Audi dealership better pay for it when I knock on their door on Monday :|

My question is, could my engine be possibly hurt after driving 7 miles with nonsynthetic oil after 80,000 miles with synthetic oil?

Honestly, your car couldn't handle being driven with non-synthetic for 2 days?

OMG this is a disaster! It's like the Day After Tomorrow but only with a car instead of human civilization!

Home is 50 miles away and I am leaving for D.C. in the afternoon (300+ miles). So I would have put 700 miles (at least) on the car with nonsynthetic.

The reason I was worried about is I've heard people say thats its ok to switch to synthetic from nonsynthetic, but no good vice versa.

my 90 legacys used non synthetic for 14 years and 130000k and my 93 SHO has used non synthetic for 11 years and 75k and both purrr like a kitten still. I think syns are more marketing that what they're worth.

LOL. Don't you remember the commercials where they fill an engine with dino juice and another with synthetic oil and then they drain both and run them and the one with synthetic oil keeps running even after the dino juice one seizes up?

I think you're fine.

Xiety, the oils are basically identical except synthetics have better detergent properties. You really need to chill about synthetic vs. regular oil... let me find the study that shows oil sample results that show the engines showed almost no difference, after 100k's miles of use between the two if they are both changed regularly. Synthetic is just better if you wait a longer time between changes.

from what i've read its not a big deal either way. I was told that switching from non syn to synthetic might have some gaskets leaking since it was thinner, but thats it.

Alright then, if studies show I am ok, I shall be ok :)

Thanks for the relief guys :)

OMG....

This thread makes baby jesus cry.

You can switch on a whim. You can mix and match. It doesen't matter, as long as you're using the correct grade. This assumes that your car is newer and in reasonable mechanical condition.

There is no fundamental difference between conventional oil and synthetic oil other than their points of origin. They're both engine oils. Synthetic just (usually) has better specs. Further, what synthetic oil do you use? Just because it is synthetic doesen't mean it is better. There are plenty of petroleum oils that are better than cheap synthetics.

Anyway.. yeah, you wasted money. :p Even the lowest of the garbage oils will hold up for ~3,000 miles. Geez.

There was nothing to worry about unless a 50 weight oil is absolutely not acceptable in your engine. I would've been pissed, too.. but I would've just demanded a free oil change or two next time, and changed it after like 1,000 miles or something stupid.

Synthetic oil is not "thinner". It is more fluid at different temperatures.

A 30 weight conventional oil and a 30 weight synthetic oil both have the same viscosity. They are both 30 weight oils at operating temperature.

Further, and I know you didn't mention this, but I know it has a bit of a mystical meaning to it..

The W-number has nothing to do with SAE viscosity ratings. It is an arbitrary rating of the oils viscosity at a certain temperature(depends on the grade; usually around -25ºF for 5W-30). To be classified a 10W-30, it has to score a certain viscosity at a certain temperature, or better. Same with 0W, 5W, 15W, etc.

700 miles wont make any diff to your car,
last time i changed my oil, i used Castrol syntec blend. My car is a 2.8 though

HOWEVER, i you have a turboed car (a4 1.8t, a6 2.7t, s4 2.7t etc), it's a good thing that you've changed it. Non-syntetic oils in turbocharged cars boil and gunk up the turbo shafts, which severly reduces the turbo's life.

What Eli said. (and thanks to Eli for having the patience to answer evryone's oil questions...I'm too busy reading up on BITOG).

really, you just wasted some money IMO. The dino oil won't hurt your engine for only 700 miles.

$75 for a synthetic oil change? Wow, I can get Mobil 1 0w40 european formula for $3.38 per quart, and the oil filter is about $12 at the dealer, or $10 wholesale online. VW dealer near me will do a synthetic oil change for about $60 (last I chekced) for V6 engines. I am not sure if the VW dealers still use Castrol's 5w40 "Belgian" oil.

AFAIK, there is no 10w50 castrol GTX?? There is 5w20, 5w30, 10w30, 10w40, 20w50 in GTX.

I do my own oil changes BTW.
I usually use "german" Castrol Syntec 0w30 (is the same formulation as european SLX, says "Made in germany" on back label), or Mobil 1 0w40 in the european cars I service.

LOL, I think this best sums up the original post.

Man, what a waste of $75 and good oil. Some dinosaur died for that you know. :p

hahaha, nothing at all will happen. You starting the car probably puts more wear on the engine than using dino over synthetic.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that Castrol doesen't make a 10W-50.. they do make a 5W-50, but thats Syntec.. lol

I just figured he meant 20W-50.

Castrol GTX 20W-50 actually isn't half bad amongst the conventional 20W-50's. Not first pick either, though.

I would strongly suggest selling the vehicle as soon as possible, no telling when that engine is going to grenade on you, Audi's MUST use synthetic, other wise the oil pump and bearings will disintegrate.

If you have not noticed, this post is highly satirical.

You just wasted money bro. For $75 you could have a nice meal at Fortune in 7 corners.

Did you actually watch the NTB techs flush and replace your oil? Things might have gone like this:

Mech1: "This dude just changed his oil and wants us to change it again."
Mech2: "Damn--That's a waste of oil!"
Mech1: "Lets just make him wait a bit. I'm goin' for a smoke."
Mech2: "Yeah, I need a break too."
