Neon's are noted for head gasket problems. But I saw a web page here on the internet in the past about changing head gaskets and there were pictures how to do it once. Search Google to find it. Personally, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

change the timing belt and water pump while you are in there.

what caused the head gasket to fail? has the car ever overheated? check the radiator for leaks. And you also need to check the head for warpage and crack, get it resurfaced if necessary.

If you're a beginner, but have at least some experince fixing cars (maybe replaced a radiator or a starter or some stuff like that), and have a set of hand tools, expect to spend at least a weekend on it. Oh, and you'll have to buy a tourque wrench. Decent ones start around $100.

you can rent one as well. You can rent a lot of the tools you need.
Definitely get a car manual from autozone/checker/napa. Read it over as to what it entails to replace a head gasket.

What else would be in a Neon?

Edit-Seriously, this is no small job and if you have little experience working on cars it is going to be too much for you to handle and you'll probably muck it up.

Relationship:

What. The. heck.?! How does fixing cars translate into affection. She could have just asked me to fix it straight out, but instead she throws me a curve and draws me into this:

her: Do you love me?
me: Ummm...Yes.
her: Then you're going to fix my car?
me: wt* :|

Why couldn't she just ask me outright? Why all this stupid rigamaroll? ughhh...

Car:

So evidently she took her car into the shop (because it was leaking oil) and they said it needed a new head gasket. Their price to replace it? A cool 1k. So, assuming I'm going to fix this thing, is it worth my time? Will I end up saving the money? I'm not a car-parts tinkering kind of guy, but I can RTFM, so should I give it a shot? or is it too deep?

wow, if she said that to me, i think i would go ballistic.like serioulsy scream my head off at her. wow.
