YACT: Getting a new car soon

Hey guys,

My car now is breaking down, and I'll probably buy a new one within a month or two. I think I can get a car around 20-22k, what do you guys suggest?

How about the Civic Si for around 17 or the Golf GTI for around 22? The GTI is getting a face lift and the new models won't hit the shores until late this fall, so I probably won't buy an old model one. The Civic Si looks nice, but I'm not sure about its performance. The shifter is at a weird place too.

Any advice would be great, thanks guys!

The SI is overpriced, if you're looking for performance. 22k would get you into the dodge rice rocket. I'd rather a VW gti than a civic SI. I've driven an SI and it's nice, but I'd never pay that price for a scant 160 horsepower.

I like the mazda 3 5-door thing...although I don't know how much it costs and if it's slow or whatever..it looks cool though.

17 is too much for the new civic si. I remember earlier this year when they still weren't selling, dealers around me were letting them go for around 15,500. And the shifter is closer to the steering wheel, so less time bewteen moving hands from the shifter to the steering wheel.

personally i think the scion tc is hideous.... i have considered it tho due to the bang for the buck....

i wish the new gti is out, i would go get one this week! looks like the Si isn't that popular around these parts.

maybe i should try to get a good deal on a lease and get a better car?

I've driven them both, and yes... the GTi is considerably more expensive, but even a 2.0 Golf at the SAME PRICE as the Si with less horsepower STILL felt better, so my vote is for the VW.

I'd get the Altima if you want a 4-door, a Scion TC coupe for 2-door, and a Miata MX-5 mazdaspeed if you want sporty (~25k).

Volkswagen Golf TDI
4-door hatchback
1.9l Turbo Diesel
Horsepower @ RPM
100@4000
Torque @ RPM
177@1800
40 MPG

20,000

edit: you can also go with the two door and opt for the 6cd changer instead, if you dont want all 4 doors. either way, its the 3rd most fuel efficent car in america(only beat by the prius and civic hybrid) so theres no way your beating the fuel economy with any other car. linky

Don't forget its 0-60 is also over 10 seconds, torque be damned :)

Well it's not too bad. The V6 will smack aside a tC without really trying, plus it's bigger. But then, it's not really in the same class, being quite a bit more expensive.

22K can get you a mazda 6s :)

you should also consider waiting for an 2005 RSX A spec but that will run over 22K a little though

but they look very nice indeed

It's not popular here either. Very few of them on the road...

It's not even popular in LA. As a Honda fanboi even I can't recommend it.

neither can i - and i used to own a civic si
