Edit3: It was the rotors. I got the rotors +pads on the front right changed but the calipher on the front left is dead so I need to get a new one, only changed the rotor there.

The mechanic also said I need new Bushes, I have no idea what they are. Said I need new

1 Sway bar Link Bushes
2 Strut Rod Bushes
3. Stabilizer link bushes
4. left front abs Multi link rear suspension Bendix Caliper

Edit 2: So if I get new rotors i need new pads too? Why can't I just get new rotors that are the same as my existing ones and not get new pads? I can get the employee discount when I buy volvo parts.

Edit: I guess it is the rotors. I guess i should get them all replaced. How are they sold? are they different from left and right and back and front?

My car shakes when I hit the breaks doing 45+ I just got new rims and had the tires checked when it was shaking at low speeds, but it still shakes at high speeds.

any ideas? and the breaks don't seem to be as responsive as they used to be.

You just got new rims? Did you have them balanced? Don't you have to go to a shop to get them calibrated or whatever? I know I always see the little weights attached to the inside of my rims. How are you sure that they are not the wheels?

Yeam I paid 60 to have the rims mounted and balanced. The guy at the tire place said my rims were bent and I needed new ones when my car was shaking at low speeds.

He wasn't just trying to sell me rims either, because he doesn't sell them.

If it shakes only when the brakes are applied, it's warped rotors. The only way it could be the wheels is if improper torquing was used, which could tweak the rotors.

Leave the house and buy em in a store. Much faster and you can easily return them for whatever reason.

exactly...you probably dont' need to buy new rotors. just take them into the shop and have them machine the rotors. shouldn't be too expensive.

um, get them resurfaced, but they may be so outta wack now that it isnt possible.

i am guessing this one has drum brakes just cuz of its age? dont know how you would redo that rotor, but ne thing is possible. and yes, that is what it is,.

if you dont know are left and right ones different please take it to a shop.

btw, they normally would come in pairs, one for front, one for back (pairs) and you will also prolly need a whole new set of brakes, not just the rotors, but the drums too (i am correct on assumin this stuff w/ drums right? my jimmy has discs front n back so i dont know as much bout drums) and then it'll cost ya a pretty penny for this.

Left/right, prolly doesn't matter on your car. Front/rear are prolly different.

Where is the shake coming from? If the steering wheel shakes, that's the fronts. If the car body shakes, prolly the rears.

If the rotors aren't thinner than the minimum spec, you may be able to have them machined. Depends on how badly they're f'norked.

NOT "BREAKS"

Also, Pep Boys and Autozone sell rotors. Depending on your car parts and labor can be from $200 and up.

Truthfully if you're paying more than $400 for pads and rotors including tax and installation you're getting worked over.

I sincerely doubt that a top of the line '88 volvo has drum brakes.
Please refresh my memory as how to 'redo that rotor' on a system with drum brakes
Fascinating!
More fascinating still!!

It could just as well be something else besides the rotors, like suspension components, tie-rods, etc.

And no, unless your current rotors appear to be heavily ringed, scored or glazed, or your pads are worn down a lot, you do not need to get new pads.

Actually, the proper break-in procedure for new rotors is to use old pads on new rotors, and new pads on old rotors (assuming same friction material between pads). This is according to many automotive brake pages out there.

On a car that old, I'd probably get all new rotors and pads. But you should also get a complete brake fluid flush every two years; brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. And have the master cylinder checked out too, as well as all the calipers for proper piston operation. Also get all suspension components checked.

Proper brake pad bed in procedure (under "prevention) can be found here as well as myths about brake vibrations:
