YACT: Family Car Time - Highlander or Pilot

GasX

Lifer
A 2003 Honda Pilot (EX) can be had for about $27,000 and is at the way top end of my budget

A 2002 Toyota Highlander (V6 AWD) can be had for around $23,000.

Is there a compelling reason to spend the extra money for the Pilot?

Im not thread crapping, but.. that is way too much for an SUV that has so little room..
check out 4runner,Murano,Explorer.

Before someone else posts it:

Go for the Highlander, since there can be only one. 😀

Now that it's been said, let the serious discussion commence.

I looked at the Highlander and got the 4Runner instead. I've been very happy with my decision.

The Murano is not larger then a Pilot.

Oh I was reffering to the Highlander, I have no idea how big a pilot it. I just assumed it was the same size as the Highlander guess I was wrong. If it is the same size as an MDX as someone posted above, that's a decent size.

Make that the Murano and 4Runner are not bigger than the Pilot. Not sure about the Explorer but I think it may be smaller as well.

I don't understand why you'd lump the 4runner in there since its more of a true SUV than the others. I surely wouldn't pay up for the sophisticated AWD system because I'd never need it. Seriously, who the heck needs downhill assist other than rock climbers?

BTW, waiting for NFS4's response 😛

I am not going to be getting anything other than a car based SUV, so Explorer, 4runner, murano, etc.. are out (note - If Murano is car based, I don't care - it's fugly)

In my mind, the Pilot is the better vehicle, I just wonder if it is worth the extra cash....

I know two people that both just got new cars, and they both got one of those (one Pilot, one Highlander). They're both satisfied.
Truthfully, I'm starting to doubt that you'll EVER buy a car.

I bought my MDX for the third row. I know the Pilot is a little bigger and has 8 seats vs 7 for the MDX.

If you need that extra capacity, its a no brainer. The Highlander has a very nice interior but the third row is useless IMO. Its much too small.

I don't believe a third row was even available on the Highlander in 2002.

Edit: just checked, and the available third row was one of a number of improvements to the Highlander for '04 (it also got more power, a refreshed exterior, better interior materials, and new options like a DVD system & side curtain airbags).

SUVs suck. That's just a fact. I can't believe anyone is looking at SUVs as a viable alternative while gas prices average $2 per gallon. Is it REALLY worth that much money?

And SUVs are just ugly. Yeah, I'm a worthless troll in this thread, but I couldn't help I just wonder what you really need it for. I would like a Truck because I'm 6'9" and I need the room, but SUVs offer no extra room. I don't see how they are necessary for anyone, just a luxury POS.

nope - that was a new option for 2004

Pilot Pilot Pilot. All I hear are people talking about the Pilot and I always laughed in my head. I thought it was a small truck till I just checked it up now. Very nice..

See which one has better deals going on Toyota/Honda and maybe that can help you pick which of the two you should get.

So you think most of the people getting SUVs should really be looking more at station wagons?

To that I would agree. Most of the times they'll carry just as much stuff and they're far nicer to drive.

please note my stated preference of a car based SUV
And SUVs are just ugly.
There's no accounting for taste...

Travelling with a family that includes pets and kids in a sedan is a huge PIA. Having the open back for the hound is a huge plus.

with the seats folded down you have more hauling space than ANY car can give you.

Hmmm.. you are right. I am going to buy a Vespa right now and get 200mpg. I will also quit my job and sign on with greenpeace.

The guy is not asking your opinion on SUVs. If you want to start an SUV bashing thread go ahead or dig up one of the countless ones on this board.

Some people actually have use for the extra space of an SUV. Sure I would love a wagon but all it is is a sedan with a large trunk. They do not hold 7 people reasonably. Minivans are nice too but where I live, I need AWD in the winter and last I checked the only minivan with AWD was the Sienna. So please go troll somewhere else.

While that may be true I ask you this.

Volvo V70 - 70 cubic ft.
Saab 9-5 Wagon - 73 cu. ft.
Subaru Legacy - 66.2 cu. ft.
Pilot - 90 cu. ft.
Highlander - 80 cu. ft.
4Runner - 42 cu ft. (seems the 2nd row won't fold?)

Granted the Pilot is much larger numbers wise but I truly doubt most people would notice a difference in cargo capacity between these vehicles.

I love my 2002 Dodge Durango and woudln't trade it for anything.

2004 model: Durango has 102.4 cu.-ft. of cargo space

You'd trade it for some more gas mileage!! HAHAHA 😛

My dad has an '02 Highlander Limited V6 and loves it. Averages about 23MPG combined.
