OK, this might be a naive question, but the Japanase automakers can get like 300hp out of their 2.0liter engines, what could they do with a 5.0liter engine like the Mustang has?

It all depends on how much you want to spend, what fuel you want to run (gas, alcohol, nitromethane etc...) what engine setup you'll have (turbo, supercharge, nitrous etc...) There is always a tradeoff somewhere like fuel economy vs horsepower, engine smoothness and nice idle vs a high revving 9000 rpm engine and so on and so on. FYI...500 cubic inch top fuel engines makes thousands of horsepower (maybe 5000 or so). Thats with an engine 198 cubic inches larger than the 302 V8 (the 5.0 liter) found in the mustangs.

Lingenfelter has a 720HP Twin Turbo C5 Corvette.
Lingenfelter also made a 640HP naturally aspirated ZR-1 Corvette. (best acceleration happened when launched at only 1100RPM, and full throttle couldn't be achieved w/o wheelspin until 3rd gear)
Saleen made a 600HP supercharged Mustang.

Anybody can do that if they want (but I don't even see any Jap 2 liter engines with 300 HP stock).....what they can't get from a 2 liter engine is torque, and torque is what move the car.

Top fuel engines make 8,000HP. They found a way of measuring it.

I've seen a 377 Chevy small block that put out 650, no power adders. Shifting occured at 7500RPM. (and it was streetable when it made 580HP, but the extra compression required race gas).

Someone posted a dyno run of a Grand National that pulled over 1100HP, there was another page with a 1400HP '67 Corvette (that one had plates, and was a daily driver)


Remember, power costs money, how much are you willing to spend?

Thats his point. A large displacement engine, such as an LS1, requires less work(and therefore less money) to get it to 300hp than the supra

Most Japanese 2.0 Liters that are achieving 300hp are using some sort of forced induction. It's really not that great in terms of technological advances. The Ford Focus SVT has 170hp from a 2.0. If they threw a Supercharger or Turbo at it, they could easily gain 100 extra HP, which is what the Japanese do. So that brings you to 270. They could easily pick up 30hp from minor engine changes.

Plus which is more reliable. A 2.0L that is stretched to it's height of performance, or a 5.0 that is in a normal/lower range of performance. Being able to achieve something doesn't mean that it's for the better.

That's his whole point. It boils down to technology versus pure displacement. Technology costs money.

Not to mention the fact that those smaller Japanese engines (e.g. the Supra) are turboed versus the normally-aspirated American engines.

And, didn't Ferrari recently make a normally-aspirated engine that put out something like 110HP per-liter?

I'm not a big American car fan, but you're almost 😉 coming off like an import fanboy. 😛

The S2000 is 120HP per liter... the RX-8 is 190HP per liter... both are normally aspirated... and are practically gutless below high rpms... 😀
 
I assume you're talking about the 2.0 turbo'd engine from the Evo Lancer. if so that's because it has a turbo on it.
domestic V8's have torque, which is something that the imports don't create much of.

i don't think the skyline costs anywhere close to a Viper. it's actually much, much cheaper IIRC, based on how frequently you see them in Japan. they're as common in Japan as Maxima's are here in the US.
and the 287 hp is underrated due to some agreement there i think.
