This thread should be re-titled:
"I suxxor at teh driving...I am SUCH a NOOB!"

THEN he could go on his rant about the car being responsible instead of his inability to properly operate it...

how does "a car's transmission disconnect makes it impossible to start my car even though the car is in park" make me a noob at driving?

Anyone with any experience would know to "jiggle the handle".

if experience = car breaking down a sufficient # of times to know every possible explanation, then yes.. i am a noob

You can't read very well, huh? In the sentence "My dad's Jeep had the same problem..." I was of course referring to the problem the OP had, with the neutral safety switch. Manuals have a similar switch by the way, only it is connected to the clutch pedal. I have been working on cars for almost 9 years, been going to school for it for a year, so please don't try to lecture me on how a simple safety switch works.

The next part of my "rant" was a jab at the fact that you cannot bump "pop, or push" start a car with an automatic, whereas it can be done with a manual. This can be handy if your starter or solenoid (yes, most cars have the solenoids integrated into the starter, but many Fords don't, in case you want to try to correct me on that too) has gone bad and you need to drive it somewhere to change said part.

Therefore, my "rant" does apply, as it is a flaw inherent in AT design. You could just as easily say that manual transmissions suck because you have to manually disengage the transmission from the engine, and shift the gears, which is an inherent design flaw. The fact is, manual transmissions are lighter, easier to repair, get better fuel economy, and have the benefit of the aforementioned starting trick.

I still like automatics, and have had 4 cars with them. That does not change the facts, however.

How dare you say anything bad about AnandTech's obviously flawless design. I motion for ban !

Remember the e-break? Or turning the wheel so your call doesn't roll? Or keeping it in first?

Woosh...

the sarcasm plane is going to have to abort landing on this one!

Is that like a lunch break, only you take ecstasy?

When I first started reading OP, I was thinking he was going to be mad because you can't bump start with autos (too much slush), but when I read the rest I was a bit disheartened. My dad's jeep had the same problem, it got so bad he had to put it in neutral to start it.
Don't worry about the pompousness of this forum, just comes with the territory. BTW, autos DO suck for the aforementioned lack of push start ability. But I guess all the auto drivers here probably carry spare starters, battery and the tools to change them.

So what does your next rant and "e-penis expose" have to do with the part of your post that I bolded and underlined? THAT is the part I was commenting on...I've worked on cars, trucks and heavy equipment for over 30 years...what's your point about your experience?
Do automatics have their weak points? Sure, as do manuals. Each also has it's strong points as well. I prefer a manual for "spirited driving" but prefer an automatic for leisure driving or commuting in heavy traffic.
