i will preface this with my conclusion: automatic transmissions SUCK.

this morning i had to pick up a girl and take her to school, so i parked my car, went inside and told her to get her stuff. we get back in my car, and lo and behold, it will not start (she got to school and i got to work just fine).

i come back to my car after work, jiggle the gear shifter, and boom, the car starts. Transmission disconnect circuit FTL = automatic transmission FTL :|

I drive a stick and my car rolled down a hill and crashed into a tree when I put it in neutral. Manual transmissions SUCK.

With you as its owner, I'd have to guess that it decided to cut down the street.

(lol, just playing man ;) )

Remember the e-break? Or turning the wheel so your call doesn't roll? Or keeping it in first?

Noob drivers suck. Though that did happen to me once, but only once. It never fooled me again. If it happens again, consider selling the car and taking the bus.

I hope the OP posts after the first time he starts his first manual transmission car while it is in gear.

i've never had that happen to me before, nor did i know there was a transmission disconnect to begin with.

This thread should be re-titled:
"I suxxor at teh driving...I am SUCH a NOOB!"

THEN he could go on his rant about the car being responsible instead of his inability to properly operate it...

how does "a car's transmission disconnect makes it impossible to start my car even though the car is in park" make me a noob at driving?

Anyone with any experience would know to "jiggle the handle".

Is that like a lunch break, only you take ecstasy?

When I first started reading OP, I was thinking he was going to be mad because you can't bump start with autos (too much slush), but when I read the rest I was a bit disheartened. My dad's jeep had the same problem, it got so bad he had to put it in neutral to start it.
Don't worry about the pompousness of this forum, just comes with the territory. BTW, autos DO suck for the aforementioned lack of push start ability. But I guess all the auto drivers here probably carry spare starters, battery and the tools to change them.

Sounds like this had NOTHING to do with the starter...just the neutral safety switch, (which can be bypassed in most cars in only a few minutes if you know how), so your rant doesn't apply.

manuals FTW because you can pop start, less things to go wrong, more control, better mileage, they are cheaper and girls think you're super duperific if you handle one well. Also your SO can not borrow your car on a whim neither can some of your friends and a I guess some cluess thieves and joyriders would bypass manuals . Manuals suck in stand still traffic that's about it.

So because one switch that prevents you from starting your car when its in gear was fouled, that means that auto transmission suck. Lets not forget the manual cars have a switch of this nature also; it's on the clutch pedal. Also, some auto transmission cars can be push started, I used to own one. ('84 MB 300D)

Maybe you should buy a jump to conclusions mat.
