YACT: Dome lamp fixture broke

beer

Lifer
I have a 1998 ford contour. Today the fixture that hods the dome lamp to the ceiling broke - the plastic around the screws must have just snapped. This is the second time it happened, the first time it was under warrenty, this time it was not. By fixture, I don't actually mean the dome lamp assembly, but the piece of plastic that the dome assembly snaps into that screws into the chassis above.

It's just a piece of hard plastic but I'm not going to go to a Ford dealer unless I have to because they're going to charge me a rediculous amount of money for what amounts to a piece of plastic that fits a certain way and have two screw holes. Where could I buy something like this at?

Carparts.com, the only store that I know of online, does not carry it. Or at least, I cannot find it.

There are only two places where you can find interior parts like that for late model cars:

1) A wrecked late model car
2) The dealer

crap

Guess I'll call tomorrow. How much can I expect to pay for a piece of hard plastic?

Honestly, you can drill and tap plastic for a machine screw. How motivated are you to save money?

actually, in this situation I can't. Only a 1/4" area is actually exposed to the chassis, the rest is the frame around the dome light fixture. Eeverything else broke off around these contact points - they're actaully still screwed into the chassis and everything else fell off. There is no way to use this again unless I can create some more surface area.

Hell, HiTek may have a useable solution. Use some hot glue and be done with it. You'll probably unload the car before you need to change the bulb.

If I could see a picture of the assembly, I might be able to see how to fabricate a backup plate of some kind. I NEVER throw anything away, so I have quite a hodgepodge of old brackets and sheet metal for this type of stuff. I know what you mean about being gouged by the dealer, so I'll gerri-rig stuff together before bending over for them.

I don't suppose you can post pics? It would be a lot easier to understand the problem.

If I had to guess, a part like that from ford is probably $20-30, based on prices I've paid for small interior items for my mustang.
