YACT: do you park the car with the hand brake engaged??

I always use my hand brake. I think you can get a ticket here in California for not having your hand brake engaged.

hell, i use it when i dont wanna keep my foot on the brake anymore!

it's a parking brake or a hand brake. it's there for parking or when you want to brake with ... not your foot 😛

and if your friends give you crap about it, then you should probably not let them drive your car, as it would appear they are too dumb to drive.

Duh...it's there for a reason

If you drive an automatic, use both, if the handbrake fails, then you've got the transmission, and vice versa.

If you drive a manual, then the handbrake will hold it much better than just putting it in gear, as you might get the engine turning slightly from the weight of holding the car...especially useful if you park on a hill.

I don't. I've got an automatic so there's not really a need unless I park on a steep hill or something.

Don't be afraid to try anything once. But don't forget to take out the witnesses if you screw up.
You must be taking out a lot of witnesses, probably when your car rolls over them. The "Park" gear on an automatic is not necessarily strong enough to hold a car in place if you're parked on a grade or if it gets hit hard enough to set it in motion. Setting your hand brake costs nothing. Not doing so is mechanical idiocy. 😛

Mine doesn't work.

and my car is 4100 lbs.

Auto trans

And I like to park on hills above crowded areas.😛

I always do this too, but none of my friends do. They give me crap for doing it, after stalling my car when they start it 🙁

You need to get new friends. Your current ones are morons.

I never use it unless I'm on extremely steep hills. The car isn't going anywhere whilst in first gear in a perfectly flat parking lot or driveway or garage. Using it would waste precious seconds of my life.

Neutral with handbrake engaged.

If on hill then 1st or R with handbrake engaged.

Who wouldn't use a handbrake with a manual? That's kinda dangerous.

I always use it. Well, usually.

Funny story: years ago, I had a psycho bitch boss from Minnesota. She took the car assigned to our group to town after I'd driven it, drove around all day, and couldn't figure out why the car was so sluggish. She finally took it to a coworker for advice, was told that she was driving with the brake on. She got laughed at, then bawled out for the potential damage she could have caused. When she got back, she screamed at me for not knowing that in Minnesota they never use the parking brake because if they forget and set it in the winter, it could freeze in the set position. So it was all my fault for not knowing that, and I should never set the hand brake because she might use the car (btw, it was a stick shift.) Silly me. We were in Oregon. I should've known that she was too stupid to adjust to a new climate, and to check the brake when she got in.

My handbrake's busted so I have to leave the car in gear.

*shakes head in shock at the stupidity of above statement*

*spits full mouthful of coffee all over monitor and keyboard*

*falls off chair onto floor*

Ditto. LOL - this topic just reminded me of that scene in Friday. Those of you who have seen the movie know what I'm talking about. 😀

Never, there's no need for it. Waste of energy and time (seriously) anyway.
It's a waste of time and energy to spend half a second pulling up the hand brake? 😕

While I hope that no one is hurt when your empty car finally does roll down that hill, I also hope that it costs you A LOT of money so that you can properly atone for your stupidity.
