I drive a sub-compact 😀 car and it has no air conditioning. Does anyone know how much it costs to get an airconditioner installed? Should I buy the parts and give them to the mechanic or should i go to a car dealer?

Pls lmk 😀

i didn't even know you could install AC, why don't u just buy a newer used car. It'll problaby be cheaper in the long run

AC was an option. I don't know why the first owner did not get AC. It would have costed him only $200 more.

That's something i never understood... how can anybody get a car and not get AC? Power windows and stuff like that i can understand, but AC is a MUST have.

i never use my AC, i hate it. I like the windows down, even in 100 degree weather.

Damn that's crazy. I hate sweating, so i always have the AC on... even if the windows are down for fresh air or because of smoking, i still like to have the AC on.

me too. I can't even think of the last time I used my AC - and I live in Florida 😉

I believe that you can have it added, just call the dealer and ask.

I had a friend who bought a 1996 Saturn without power steering and no right mirror. He said that A/C was teh only option that his car had, but he never used it since he liked getting 44 miles per gallon.

I haven't, but I know a guy who looked into having it done and it was cost prohibative. If you plan to keep the car for some time, it may be worth it to you otherwise it's not worth it, from what I've heard.

don't bother going to a dealer. A/C is NOT a dealer installed option, and even if dealer was able to install it, they will charge up the wazoo for it. either cars come with A/C or without A/C from the factory.

look up your yellow pages automobile --> air conditioning. there are places that specialize in auto airconditioning repair that will install aftermarket A/C systems. from what i hear, it will cost anywhere from $900 up to $1600. the trick is to have the A/C system installed between November to January, when the business is at the slowest. you could get the same A/C system installed for around $900-$1100 between November to January, when the same system will cost $1300-$1600 any other time, since business picks up. this is in San Diego so you should be able to get one cheaper, depending on where you live.

I doubt it's as easy as purchasing a few parts and having a mechanic install it for an hour or two.

It's probably going to cost A LOT, much more than it's worth - possibly half the vehicle's cost if we're talking a Kia Rio or something of that nature.

My parents live in a climate where a cold winter's day is 50 degrees and a hot summer day is 78. I never once used air conditioning ing the house or the car while living there. Hell, none of the houses in the area even have air conditioning.

Totally depends on your car... I just had a/c installed on my 2000 civic a couple of weeks ago...

With my civic, the a/c is an dealer installed opinion... this means Honda produces a whole a/c kit (with all the parts, bolts, instructions) for my car, and the dealer installs it if you want...

When I wanted to get a/c, I tried to find a used unit cuz a brand new Honda a/c unit would cost around $750 before tax and shipping... But since the a/c unit contains so many components (many pipes and belts), it would be a very complicated job even if you can find a donor car (most autobody shops I called wouldnt even do it if I have all the parts)...

I ended up making some calls to the local dealers... turned out one of them has a brand new Honda unit in stock... since they dont sell my 2000 civic anymore, they were eager to sell it to me for cheap... I ended up paying around $700 out the door, including ALL parts and labor... This comes with a 1-yr warranty too...

You might want to try and do the same, but really depends on the make/model of your car...

Your parents live in Seattle?? 😛

AC is not very expensive (~$500 usually) and can be installed by the dealer for most cars (although they usually charge more). Just call around.

okay, i guess i was misinformed. i was looking for A/C unit for a friend's car, and the dealerships i talked to said the A/C is not a dealer installed option, in general for all makes. it was for a VW by the way. i guess it's different for Hondas.

On my car it was a dealer option. Of course, that was ~12 years ago. A honda, btw.

yup. but installing it would probably cost as much as the higher trim model which includes ac already. kinda pointless
