YACT: Defogging windows

when you turn on the defrost, how do you know whether to turn it to hot air or cold air?

(I know, it's stupid... but I've always just used trial and error in the past)

My windows except for the rear are all defrosted within <15 seconds of turning on the defroster, regardless of hot or cold. 😛

actually two things happen when you do this...
If you turn on hot it will evaporate the frost on the inside of your window,
but if you turn on cold the fog will accumulate on the outside and you can either have it blown away or use your wipers.

Only because your in Texas!

I've never had a problem with it anywhere else much colder than TX 😛 Deicing is a different story, but defogging is just moisture that accumulates on your windshield.

I always use whatever temperature is more comfortable. So, usually hot in the winter.

Of course, my car has this REALLY LAME feature where the AC kicks on when you turn on the defogger, so I try not to use it at all.

The AC turns on in modern/newer cars b/c it helps with the defrosting process. There's a reason why it does that.

A/C = dehumidifier

let down the windows if its cold outside and your windows will defrost. I found this out yesterday while driving.

I don't care, it lowers my mileage and robs power. I like having a lot of control over what my car does and when it does it😉

turn on the A/C and set the temp control to maximum. A/C drastically cuts the humidity, and the heat vaporizes the fog. yay. basically you want it hot, but you also want it dry, so that's why you turn on the A/C, even in the winter.

yes because having a defroster that works poorly is WAY better than one that works well.

brrr where do you live? It's 26 degrees outside right now...no way would I be doing that. I just turn on the defroster and wait..and wait...and then drive away with my windows half-foggy because my defroster sucks. The cops will pull you over for that...(having foggy/frosty windows). Not that I would know or anything.

defrost routine:

Rear: hit rear defrost button - 10 minutes

Front: Put on defrost setting, AC will come on, turn heater on to dry the cold air, deforsted as soon as car warms up.

yes because having a defroster that works poorly is WAY better than one that works well.

having a defogger that works 90% as well and doesn't sap your power like mad is WAY better than having one that works normally.

I usually just crank the heat up, turn the fan on high, and switch the control knob to defrost. This effectively reduces the frost/fog and keeps the air from blasting into my face until it gets warm enough to turn on the blowers.

Always use it hot. But if it's the summer and it's raining and that's causing it to fog up, then you can use cool air with the AC.

circulating the a/c in the winter by using the defrost isn't a bad idea; it helps circulate the ester oils that lubricate teh a/c system (and that otherwise wouldn't get circulated in the winter). this can prevent leaks by keeping seals supple and sealable.

My 2003 Civic Hybrid has a hack available to disable the AC when on defrost mode. So I'm assuming many other cars should also have this feature. But you most likely will need access to the cars service manual to find out how to do this.

To deFOG the interior of a window, turn on the AC and turn the thermostat to any temp you want. The AC will dry out the air and remove the fog from the windows.

If the outside is wet, you want to warm the windows. So use hot air.

On humid days or in the rain, it is best to run the AC to keep the interior dry and prevent fogging.
