Yes, I know it would probably be better to buy a new car, but hopefully someone has a ballpark figure on what the cost of replacing this engine would be.

1991 Plymouth Sundance, I think it's basically a Dodge Shadow.
2.2L version, I believe.

Thanks.

I'm thinking there's a good chance you're right. I would guess 400 - 800. Then there's installation.

What state do you live in ?
Why does the engine need replacing ? (Bad head gasket ?, knocking bearings ?)

The local junkyards sell 2.2's for $300, installation should be around $300.

Yeah, unless you can find someone over at turbododge.com in the for sale section that's local to you to sell one for cheaper. TBI engines are cheap as anything.

I live in nothern Virginia. The engine has a bent rod, I think. This is what people have said from listening to it. I can afford a new/slightly used car in terms of monthly payments, but I just started working, and will be moving out soon, so I'd rather wait it out with a junker until I've earned enough to feel comfortable.

Bent connecting rod ?

Highly unlikely, please describe the symptoms and or any noise it makes, first off, does it run ?

I know little to nothing about cars. I changed my battery once, and that's about as much as I've ever unbolted from a vehicle. :)

Engine basically sounds like a horrible lawnmower. Banging, bucking, severe jumping around, I think I saw sparks from the bottom of the car when the tow guy drove it off the truck. Two mechanics listened to it for a second, and said it would need to be replaced.
The cause of this was a lack of oil, I almost positive. Haven't looked at it much since Tuesday, when I had to wait 3 hours for a tow from AAA. Their new towing service blows :(

all of those chrysler cars from that era have engines that knock.

Really ?

I run my own shop and rarely see old 2.2's and 2.5's knocking, where are you drawing your conclusions from ?

Have it diagnosed by a trained technician, DO NOT rely on tow truck drivers, if you did run it out of oil and the engine is knocking badly, then yes you probably burnt up the crank and connecting rod bearings.

This is not light knocking. I've seriously damaged the engine, that I know. There is a night-and-day difference between the way it worked Tuesday at 8, and the way it started working at 8:30 when it began to feel like it was going to explode.

$300 for installation!? I had a '92 topaz and had the engine replaced in that....the shops all estimated at least $1200 for installation....

And your diagnosis of rod knock is based on the car driving past you in the parking lot once?

I'm with roger, some ticking from the head is pretty common depending on the year and lifter/cam combo used but not knocking.

Call some reputable local shops and get some quotes, should be able to do it pretty cheaply with a used engine.

That is my standard rate for replacing a 2.2 or a 2.5, they are one of the easiest to R&R, the hardest part is the rusty exhaust bolts behind the back of the block.

Damn. where were you four years ago? I'm pretty sure mine had the 2.2.

If I decide to go ahead with this, instead of donating the car to the Red Cross, should / must I rely on my local shop to find and purchase the engine?
