YACT: check engine light (or MIL)

😵
i just paid $500 to get the knock and O2 sensors fixed because my engine light came on. there's a key trick you can use to turn the light off? if so, specific to dodge 2004?
i have a 97 maxima btw...

Turn the key on and off about five times.
Just to the position before it actually starts, of course... so Off-On-Off-On-Off-On, that should do it. Works on my 04 Chrysler.

my mechanic told me that in class he had learned that if you turn the engine on and off 200 times the engine resets itself and the light turns off....
200 times???

That'll spit out a code on the odometer.

Oops, yeah, then you can check it on TroubleCodes.net">http://www.troublecodes.net/</a>

Hey, between three posts we got the whole thought process out! 😛

EDIT: BTW, the most common reason is the gas cap wasn't tightened.

yeah, all i need is the code, i could wait until tomorrow and using my buddy's tool to get the code. i just want to know what the heck is wrong with my brand new 1 year old truck. i already check the gas cap and it is screw in tight... so...

If you want to double-check to make sure that wasn't it, disconnect the negative terminal on your battery for a minute then reconnect it. That will clear the light, and if it was just the gas cap, it shouldn't come back on.

Argh, I heard this is a common problem with Dodge trucks. I guess I'll have to reset the light and then maybe looking into buying a new cap.

You know, reseting the light doesn't actually fix the problem. 🙂

Yeah, I have to buy another one myself, since my GF lost ours. The aftermarket one I bought doesn't fit well enough to keep the light off :|
