I have one of those little code reader units, and I read the code out of my car.
It's a 1997 Hyundai Elantra GLS. I looked up code P1613 in the software that came with the code reader. It says: "Manufacturer Contrl Auxiliary Inputs Auxiliary Outputs"

Then after reading the code, the check engine light is no longer on.

Did my car just decide to screw with my mind for the fun of it?

According to this, it's likely ECM 'failure' related. It probably just got hung up during your last run, then when you shut off / started the car it reset itself.

If it's any consolation, my car ('96 Grand Am) is now randomly spitting out that the secondary O2 sensor (after the cat.) has failed. It'll be on a few days, then shut off for a couple weeks, then randomly pop back on while driving. Nothing freaks you out more than a "Check Engine" light when you're cruising along in the middle of nowhere.

I actually did try Googling first, then I came here. The info I found was mainly forum posts saying, "It might be any of 10 different things," or, "I don't know."

I guess I'll have to research what "ECM" means now.

Great, and it gave a "check engine" error. That makes about as much sense as "Illegal Error."
;)

I liken the "Check Engine" light to going to a doctor, and receiving a diagnosis of, "You're sick."
"Well gee Doc, that sure isn't helpful. What do you think I should do about it?"
"Get some medicine."

Hopefully it was "just one of those things."
