YACT : Changing the airfilter does make a power difference........... so change that airfilter.

The last few days / weeks I have been complaining of a bad pickup on my 2000 Ford Focus. I couldtn figure out why i had a sluggish pickup considering its only got 34K miles on the clock..

I happened to remember this morning that the airfilter hasnt been changed. The car has been to Ford and EZLube for service, neither of them actually checked teh airfilter did they? The airfilter isnt easy to get to, you got 4 screws to take off and then get to the filter, not as easy as the tercel were its a clip to take off.

So I took it off, and sure enough the airfilter was blackned on one side, the other side was relateively much better looking. so I just rotated teh rectangular airfilter and took off to the local pepboys for a new airfilter. I immediatlye felt teh difference.. all of a sudden I was doing 80 before even I knew it.. the power was back. The car seemed to be pulling a lot stronger.

As it turns out the focus airbox is very funny. Though it uses a rectangular filter, the air intake (what's coming from outside) is right under the Air Intake for the engine... meaning air will directly flow from inflow thru the filter to the engine air intake. Hence only about 1/2 of teh rectangular filter gets used, teh rest is hardly used.. You could see by looking at the filter, one side was black, the other wasnt as black.

Anyway on the other side of the rectangular box is an Airbox resonator. I am going to take her out tommorow. That will mean another place for air to go in.. and give me a throaty engine sound..

Im happy, 7 bucks and I got my car back to fullpower... I happily did a burn out after I replaced teh airfilter ( I couldnt do so before )

Manjul

PS: Next time I am going K&N rectangular airfilter (or maybe tubed one) but if I go K&N tubed I will change the throttle body and put in bigger injectors.. shoudl cost me about 300 bucks all together.. when i have that moeny then I am putting that in.

i too changed my filter, which was caked with dirt. ick. seems smoother slightly more power now. but then again i also changed my spark plugs, so it could be both or eitehr🙂

bigger TB and injectors are totally uncessary on your car at its current stage

He speaks the truth. Unless you're pumping more air extra fuel delivery could not be more worthless.

The K & N is known not to filter fine dust/dirt very well, so more larger particles are drawn into the cylinders, which is bad, bad, bad over the long term. I just wouldn't do that to a new car.

I took the resonator off my Civic, and I immediately noticed that it sounded worse, and that the power, while hardly different, was if anything, ever so slightly reduced. Noise =/= power. Quiet in normal driving does = refined, quality feeling, so I like my car as quiet as it was designed to be, unless the stereo is on.

I switched to a K&N filter around 36k miles ago and mine is getting to the point that the dirt is embedded that the cleaning kit will not remove it. I'd been thinking that I should replace it soon with a traditional unit.

I personally think K&N claims of high flow while providing the same/better filtration while having a life of 100k miles is pure BS. I can't see this thing lasting much longer than 40k miles.

Btw, My truck is a 96 K1500 with the high flow filtering unit which uses a HUGE air filter very similar to a semi truck. It's has easily 2 to 3 times the surface area of your average filter, so that isn't my problem.
