YACT: Carmax sucks

So my gf and I took her 98 Eclipse to Carmax yesterday to get it appraised. They basically give you an offer, and you can take it or leave it. Her car is in excellent condition, no mechanical problems, only one small dent on the trunk lid.

Kelly Blue Book value for her car: $7000
Edmunds value for her car: $6300
Current going rate for a 98 Eclipse GS with around 75000 miles: $6000-8000

Carmax's offer? $2200
And get this: Carmax has a 98 Eclipse GS listed on their website for: $10900
:|

500% fvcking markup!?!?!?!

/end rant

CLIFFS:
1) Car is worth $6000
2) Carmax offers $2200
3) Resells for $11000
4) Carmax sucks
(I didn't take the offer, in case you didn't read the whole post)

You're not kidding. Only reason I took it to Carmax first was because a friend of mine sold his car to them in TX for over the TMV. *sigh* oh well. Craigslist here I come.

If that's their business model and they're still in business, then obviously it works for them...and only needs to work for them.

Best way to sell your car to get the most money is to sell it yourself...but I understand many people don't have the time to do that.

I got my car appraised at Carmax and have no complaints. The BB trade in value is $3100. They offered me $2700. This is for a 96 Maxima with 110K miles.

It's not like carmax is all there is.

yea, carmax offered me 15k for my 2k3 dodge ram quad cab in mint condition... there is absolutely no way i would take a hit like that... so i just kept it. they suck... and they prey on people that have to do something to get a cheaper car...

i wont ever deal with those crooks.

Yeah, they only offered me 6K for my Durango when dealers around here are selling ones with similar features and miles for 12!

buying/selling used cars is a sure way to get screwed, unless your the propriater. They usually charge 14-18% on the loans too. Nice.

How are they crooks? You aren't being robbed if you agree to sell it to them at their price. 😛

The used car market is rough. People also tend to underestimate what repairs cost to make and how the car business runs.

Lets say they bought that dented car for example. First they gotta get it fixed and a dent plus paint is a grand easy. They also have money tied up in a dented car doing time in a body shop which isn't how car dealers make money.

After that, they have a 7 year old car that most banks won't finance. Cars over 5 years old drop like a rock in price for this factor alone.

They figure they will lowball you to get you off the lot and avoid the hassle. But that's business.
