YACT: Car will not start

2000 Honda Accord 4cyl will not start. When I turn the key it cranks for about a half second and then there is a fast clicking sound coming from the distributor. I checked the fuses for the starter signal, ignition coil, and fuel pump and they are all fine. Any ideas?

Battery+alternator, or one of the two, most likely.

Bad alt - no chargey the battery.
Bad battery - no takey the charge.
Bad battery - kills good alternator

Autozone / Advance will check both of them for free, if you bring them in.

I still could when the battery on my Miata diew over the winter. Everything worked, but it didn't have enough juice to start.

That doesn't matter. The starter requires huge amounts of current to spin up the motor. THe battery may be able to supply light current to run lights, radio, etc. but probably doesn't have enough grunt to run the starter.

When something like this happens the simplest thing is normally the cause. It takes less than an hour to remove your battery and get a ride to the parts store to have it checked, or to just call up AAA and have them give you a new battery.

Checking spark and fuel do not just entail "I have spark plugs" and "I have fuel," by the way.

After that exhausting and comprehensive set of diagnostic tests I think it is safe to assume that the battery is good. 😕
