What about the Mazda 3 with the small engine? Supposed to get 35 mpg highway?

But the thing is, if she's getting 19/26 now, that really isn't all that bad. As others have pointed out, if she has to sell it and fork down thousands of dollars for a newer car, she will likely end up spending MORE money overall - just at the car dealer, not at the pump.

i say a regular corolla with a 5-speed will do. thousands cheaper than the prius, while managing a mpg not that inferior to any of the hybrids.

although if she's used to the luxury, the only lux hybrids i can think of are the accord (if you consider that a hybrid), and the lexus R400h.

i'd just get a corolla if it's meant for work.

I have a Civic EX that gets around 39mpg-44mpg on the highway. The Civic HX is rated at 44mpg highway which is even higher than the 38mpg the EX is rated at.
