YACT: Burnt rubber smell from vents..

After driving on the freeway, I come to a stop (red light, stop sign, etc...) and there's a burning rubber smell emitting from my vents. It only smells when I stop and after I drive for about 10 mins. There is also smoke coming from my hood, although not a cloud, but you can tell there is smoke. I looked under the car and I see some drips from what seems like the transmission. Everything about the car is normal except for that smell.

Anybody know what's going on?

Update on the drippings. Oil drips, but looks like it's all over the underside. Might be a leak in the engine that's dripping down everything?

That was from letting the car idle for 10 mins just now.

sounds like tranny fluid burning. might be oil burning, but i doubt it.

Something (oil, trans fluid) is probably dripping on the exhaust. You should have that looked at.

What's your coolant level? A cooling hose might have blown. What color was the fluid you saw?

Did you just have some work done to your car? The mech could have gotten careless and dripped some fluids on the motor. ANother possibility--an electrical short?

No work done on my car. What kinda of electrical short could it be?

Coolant level is max, color was dark, but I wasn't too sure since it was dusk outside. I'll check it again today.

check your tranny fluid level, oil level, and fluid levels really. radiator coolant for the most part will smell like skunk

i bet someone put used condoms on the engine block. that would produce a burnt smell and smoke i'm sure

happened to me after I took my car to jiffy lube for an oil change. same symptom. turns out the jiffy lube guys "didn't do a clean job and left oil on some heated surface". no harm but scared the heck out of me. never going back to jiffy lube again.

My friends in the car with me have confirmed that it's more of a burnt rubber smell than a burnted oil smell. The oil level was a little low so I'm filled it up and I'm letting it sit and idle for about 10 mins and I'll go back and see what the drippings are.

do you get purple colored smoke? My car was leaking brake fluid very slowly but, everytime i slowed down or stopped, i got the purple smoke coming from my left front wheel and a terrible smell. Brought it to goodyear and they patched it up.
