I want to add some subwoofers and an amp to my car to get some bass, but I don't really know that much about car audio and selecting components that go together. How do I interpret all the numbers in the specs for subs and amps? Or more specifically how do I pick the right amp to go with the subs I want? The car is my new Mazda 3 and I'm keeping everything else stock. I want a decent bang for the buck solution, not too expensive but decent sound. I'm thinking 10" subs.

TIA

I like the Infinity BassLink one.. crutchfield has it for 350 but you can get it cheaper elsewhere...

Its pretty decent, small room, good sound and its got an onboard amp.

Anyone care to educate me on the dual voice coil subwoofers? How do you wire up the amp to handle the 2 seperate coils?

Errr I guess I should have said this before. I'm not installing it myself, I just wanted help figuring out how to choose the right components to buy together, as per my first post.

Just make sure you match the wattage on the amp, as best you can with the sub.

the worst is having an underpowered amp with a high-powered sub.. sounds like ass..

my amp and sub are matched perfectly and it sounds really good if you ask me.
comparing with most of my friends systems IMO it sounds probably the best.

it's a 400W RMS amp, and a 400W RMS 4ohm sub (for now) but getting a 2nd sub to add to the equation :D

Hmmm that's interesting. I was looking at some 10" Pioneer subs at Circuit City which I think were 500 watt, not sure exactly. The guy was recommending this cheap $80 amp that I don't remember the wattage of but it was lower than the subs. And he was saying it would sound good.

Only look at RMS ratings of amps and speakers. Peak or max wattage ratings are meaningless.

Personally, a single 10 with a good amount of power should be good enough to give you the low end you're looking for. I've even heard a single 8 get very loud.

I would NOT get a 12" sub for a car your size. Especially if where you're gonna put your sub is connected to the passenger area (like your car is).

One 10" (spend a little more and get a decent one, ie JL audio would be a good choice) is enough.
