$14K would get you any number of GM cars and they are bulletproof. The 3800 engine and trans is a work of art with absurdly low failure rates.

Bonneville SLE
Bonneville SSEi
Regal LS
Regal GS - Abboud interior package is quite nice
Impala SS
Grand Prix GT
Grand Prix GTP

All this town car love - I thought it was just me. I took a few friends of mine out in it today and they stopped laughing at me - they are jealous, now. One of my friends was convinced that it was perfect until she found out it didn't have a CD player.

I sat in the back, also, for the first time. Its easily as comfy as the front, even with the front seats all the way back (how I have to drive it). With the front seats all the way forward (for kicks) its like a house in the back - its amazing.

Also, three living people fit in the trunk with it closed (we tested this), so god knows how many people you could fit when you don't gotta worry about their comfort . . . .

I am amazed every time I get in by how comfy it is - and just driving along you can lean back and it just feels so nice, a completely wonderful car. Would be the best road tripping car I can think of. And the styling - I love it. Not a fan of the 98+ model years, but up until 97 it was pure class.

  1. Best bang for the buck by far!

Haha, I read this and the avatar matched and I thought I had posted this!

anyway, here is me and my 1997 Lincoln Town Car (Cartier, not signature) - picked it up on tuesday. Fantastic car, mine is in excellent shape (has the new part aluminum intake manifold, new air shocks, ~80k on the clock, very clean, well maintained).

How much?

7, from a dealer. The site Ornery links to listed dealer for a cartier at 7.6, KBB said 8.7, so I'm happy with the purchase.

edit - the site ornery links has an overview - here's a good quote:
That floaty suspension won't be disturbed a bit by expansion joints, pot holes or the occasional Honda Accord.

Its true. You hear expansion joints, you don't feel them. Same thing with little imports.

For 14K you can get a NEW almost fully equiped Hyundai Elantra. IMO it fits all of your requirements. I've had mine for a year now and I still think I made the best choice. Otherwise, the Avalon is a very nice car as well.

Answer me this - what would you feel more comfortable hauling your kids around in?

A hyundai elantra or a maxima/accord/crown vic?

Did you even read his needs?

Yes I did. I'm just pointing out he doesn't have to settle for a used car. IMO the Elantra is a fairly safe car, especially considering its size. It has driver and passenger front and side airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners (which I admit I don't quite understand), side impact beams, and there are big anchors for holding a child seat in the back (I know because they keep getting in my way). I think it's quite a safe car.

I don't believe in such a thing as "settling for a used car." I've never owned a brand new car, and don't ever plan on it.

I don't really feel like I would be 'settling' for a used car, I'd rather let someone else take the huge depreciation hit in the first 3-4 years. If the car is good quality it should be 'as good as new' with 40-70K on the clock. We used to have a 98 Accord LX with 125K on it and it drove as good as the day we got it, then someone totalled it back in '04. I can afford a more expensive vehicle but don't want to spend the money, still have 2 years left paying off an 04 Pilot at $600/Mo (which we will keep 10 years at least).

Yeah, the 2002 Maxima for my price range would be hard to come by, may have to up my stakes a little if that's what I want, 255 BHP is tempting Vs 222 on the '01's.

Fmr12B - I will check out the cars you suggested, the Impala SS sounds like fun!
