UPDATE Feb. 2: I hadn't heard from the adjuster as of 4:00pm yesterday, so I gave her a call around 4:30pm or so. She said that she went to the body shop and took some pictures. The shop was unable to get my hood open to evaluate mechanical damage yesterday, so they will be doing that today. The adjuster said the hit is pretty extensive and there is probably frame damage. She said she will be playing with some numbers this afternoon as soon as the shop gives her an estimate and she will call me either today (2/2) or tomorrow (2/3) to let me know if it is a total loss or if they are going to repair it.

UPDATE Feb. 1: So the insurance adjuster called yesterday. First, she took a recorded statement of what happened. Then she told me she would be looking at my car today (2/01) to find out how much the damage is and if it needs to be a total loss. I'll let you guys know with the next update, of course.

UPDATE Jan. 31: Pics! So do most of you still think it will be totalled?

Original post, Jan 29: Really bad intersection for wrecks (two interstates merge together, all the people on the left are trying to get over to the right, while everyone on the right tries to get over to the left, 6 lanes merging into 3)...

Anyway... a young girl in a new Honda Civic switched lanes in front of me and then slammed on her brakes. I hit her. I tried to swerve to the right to get out of the way, so my driver side corner hit her rear passenger corner. My air bags did not deploy, but it was a nice hit... hood bent in half, quarter panel mangled, wheel well pinching tire. I put on my emergency lights right away and was able to pull myself onto the shoulder. The dumbass girl sat in the lane, where I hit her, opened her door and started apologizing. I yelled at her to get in her car, put on her emergency lights and get in the shoulder and she did.

I called 911, then my insurance. The cop showed up and she told him the same thing she told me (she slammed on her brakes, there was no way I could have not hit her, etc.) The cop took her insurance info and then mine. He explained that Kentucky is a no fault state so my insurance would pay for my car and hers would pay for hers (her rear bumper was torn/busted, her right rear quarter panel was a little bent, and her exhausted was all fuxored). The officer let me know that he has noted it in his report that me hitting her had nothing to do with me not paying attention, but he legally has to put that I was following too closely simply because I hit her.

Anyway, I got my rental car afterwards and everything is cool. I've been driving for 6 years and I've only had to lock up my tires maybe once or twice in the past, I really feel that this accident was unavoidable. I was alter, driving with the flow of traffic, and then BAM, the girl slams her brakes on.

How much $$$ do you think is involved with my car? I know I'll need a new hood and grill, quarter panel and wheel well, bumper and bumper cover, headlight, radiator and assembly, air intake, some electrical stuff (I saw that a couple boxes with relays in them were all fubared), not sure of what else, that's all I could see. My brother said the car has risk of a bent frame since I hit the corner of my vehicle??? My car blue books for $5500 or so.

Hey, on the bright side YOU'RE OK.

And, you get to replace that thing you call a car!

;)

Sounds like it might be totalled. $5500 damage ain't hard to do. This was $5990 damage on my Sentra, and the car was totalled (wasn't my fault, by the way, the other driver was cited for failure to yield on a left turn). :(

Figure each of the body parts is a few hundred and a few hundred to paint them...another few hundred for the headlight, closer to $500 each for the radiator and air intake...

Of course your car has different prices but this is what I've paid for parts when replacing them on my car...

I did some pricing from www.everythingnissa.com, and I got a $4000 figure just from doing the body parts, headlight/fog light/corner light, radiator + assembly, and adding rough estimate paint prices. I didn't include any other stuff that I'm not sure about.... like the eletrical stuff, the stuff under the bumper cover (like the bracket and all that stuff)... uhg, stuffs add$ up quickly.

IF you are getting quotes like that just for the body pannels and radiator expect your car to be totaled, because when you add labor and the frame straightening on top of that it goes well over the KBB value.
Time to start car shopping. Glad you wern't hurt. :)

Having worked for an auto insurance company, I can say most companies will total a car when the repair cost equal 50-60% of the total value of the car. Obviously, this is not definitive, but pretty general based on my experience working at a ins co, and my wifes best friend was a claims adjuster at another co.

Considering the damage you're describing, I'm willing to bet your car will be totaled.

Yes.

BTW did we ever get an update to the girlfriend needing space thread? This is reaching SPIDER status.

That's idiotic.

Glad you're ok, hope it doesn't end up costing you much money.,

man, that sucks. but with no one hurt and no one pointing the blame at you, i guess it could have turned out worse.

Kentucky is a no fault state...

That sucks about as much as the accident, but maybe not, since you could easily be faulted. This is why I don't leave room for people to cut in, in the first place. Sure as shlt, I'll get the ticket for rear ending them in a situation like this.

Doubt it is totalled, but just go get estimates.

Hell I thought my Stealth was totalled when I got hit on I80 just outside of Chicago. Dumbass hit me at 65mph (I was not moving). Estimates put it at $2500 in damage. Total repair bill was $7 shy of the cars value.

No fault is fvcking asnine. Nuff said.

So you'd rather have the high probability of rear-ending somebody 99% of the time than the 1% of the time somebody cuts in front of you? I leave a long following distance and I've always had time to back up if I see somebody come in front of me. Admittedly sometimes I can see they're about to do it so I'll follow dangerously close to the car in front to prevent it.

At this point, I'm going to go ahead and assume the majority of the ATOT population has no idea what "no-fault" means.

Second, the cop has no idea what it means either. But then again, from reading so many of their confusing chicken-scratch accident reports, most don't really care what goes on in an accident and will tell you anything to keep you quiet.
