YACT: Audio -- I think I'm ready

After waiting for months to get some money, I finally have enough to buy some new audio equipment for my car. I've looked on Crutchfield and talked to other people who have upgraded their systems, and I think I know what I want. Here is what I plan on getting:

Alpine SPS-46C2 3-Way 4x6 (Front) -- $80
Alpine SPS-69C3 3-Way 6x9 (Rear) -- $120

I'm not going to purchase a head unit YET. I will be buying one in the near future, however. I'm also not sure whether or not I should get a separate subwoofer or not, but right now I think upgraded speakers will be just fine.

I have one question. I went to Crutchfield and did a search for my car. It says that a certain 4x6 will fit perfectly, yet a "universal" 4x6 will not fit my car. What is the difference, and can I get away with a universal 4x6 speaker? (The front Alpines are "universal")

Crutchfield's magazine lists the depth of all of their speakers and the depth your car can accomodate. You'd be best off just finding something that fits that depth, but you might be able to fit something larger in there.

In response to the question about the 4x6's

Crutchfield told me that i had 4x6 front speakers, but showed that only certain 4x6 speakers would fit. I ignored the advisor and ordered the 4x6 speakers i wanted. Turns out that the speakers i ordered were 4x6 square shaped, and my car had 4x6 oval shape. I got them to fit but i had to cut the door panel (on the inside) to fit the larger profile.

As far as a subwoofer goes, I also have 6x9's in the rear and have found them to have plenty of bass for my taste. I'm not running off a stock headunit, however. The system is powered by my kenwood HU, putting out 22W RMS/channel
