YACT : Anyone with a turbo car done any mods? (performance oriented)

I have a '99 Audi A4 1.8T quattro (tiptronic), I've gotten the ecu upgraded, stainless steel cat back exhaust (borla), high flow cat, slightly bigger turbo (k04 vs. k03 in stock a4), upgraded diverter valve, new ported/polished exhaust manifold. Car sounds good too. Stock HP was 150 and torque was 155, I'm guessing HP now is around 240 and torque is ~270 lb-ft. The difference is huge from stock, stepping on the gas and getting pushed back into the seat is nice, not much turbo lag. :D

I want to put a gt2871r in it.

you're probably going to want to do the level 10 upgrade on the transmission though..

Not really. You can do brakestands with the auto and build up boost, do 4 wheel burnouts. can't really do that with a manual.

Do you have a tip? Yeah, I've been consdering getting a VB upgrade through level 10. I think the max. torque is 225 lb-ft, I'm way over that now. Its hard getting good tuning/software for GTxx turbos. I'm considering getting the k04 pc-16 software, its more aggressive. If I get that, I'll need an fmic, bigger injectors, adjustable fpr (fuel pressure regulator).

I have a 5 spd, but if I had to do it all over again I would have gotten the tip. I'll probably go with the PC-16 too, as I can't really afford to upgrade the turbo again, and like you said the software kinda sucks at the moment.

pac1085: Did you get a performance clutch for the 5 speed? Other than that, the manual tranny is fine for bigger turbos. In addition to a valve body upgrade, I might have to get a high stall torque converter also.

Not yet, going to have to in the spring since mine is starting to slip. I think I'm going with southbend DXD and an unorthodox aluminum flywheel.

Cool. Yeah, I considered getting a gt28 turbo, but I've spent too much money already. I had to replace the coilpacks recently because not long after I got the k04, I started getting misfires. What kind of DV do you have? Steel or rubber?

Can you tell me how much those set of mods cost? Where did you get the work done, and can you list the mods specifically and where they could be purchased? I'm close enough to APR that I could just drop the car off there and have them do the work.

I got all my work done at a giac dealer (www.ktrperformance.com) in Ayer, MA.

Depending on your model year, your costs and performance gains might be different (mine is B5). First of all, I got the ecu upgrade from giac - that alone can get you about +50 HP and +80 lb-ft. of torque. The ecu upgrade is $500. Both giac and apr give you similar gains - I think giac is a bit more "aggressive". If you want to get a slightly bigger turbo like the k04, you'll need to go giac because apr does not write software for the k04, otherwise you can get an even bigger turbo which will obviously cost a lot more than the k04. The k04 is basically a replacement for the stock k03 turbo. You should definitely get a stainless steel exhaust - there are many companies like apr, milltek, borla, neuspeed. The borla cost about $700 from awe-tuning.com and took about 2.5 hours to install, I think. I got it installed at a giac dealer.

The high flow cat was about $400 from techtonics tuning. If you upgrade, you will also need an aftermarket diverter valve, since the stock one wont be able to handle the higher boost. A good and cheap one to get is the 710N, I think its the same one that is in a TT, that can be gotten for $50, I think. Do you have a tip or manual?

None of these prices include labor as I did all the work myself..

My K04 was $900 with the gaskets, etc.

The ECU upgrade was $600, plus overnight shipping both ways.

The exhaust was $900

I paid about $180 for the DV. Its all aluminum, no rubber diaphram.

I'm probably going to do the PC16 upgrade this summer, so I'll have to get an intercooler (probably around $1000 all said and done), injectors ($150ish?) and an adjustable fpr (again..150ish?)

Clutch is $450, flywheel is $550.

Not a big fan of APR, they make nice stuff but it is way overpriced. If you have the money, they just came out with a SIII+ kit :)

tontod, my brother has a very nicely modded 2002 A4, still a B5 though. i can try and get him on here though (he hasn't been to AT in a while). i'm not sure what his car pulls, but i believe it can beat a stock B5 S4 (don't quote me though:))

They didn't make B5 A4's in 2002, only S4s.

pac1085: Thats good that you did all the work. I bought a slightly used k04 for $1100, I think KTR charged me about 2.5-3 hours labor. I think that time may have included some other minor work, I forget. Do you have a boost gauge?
