MR2 Spyder or Miata. Anything else Japanese, RWD, and under $3000 is probably going to have some serious miles (and rust) on it. And good luck finding an unriced Supra. 😀

Good luck finding an MR-Spyder under $3000 that isn't missing half its body...Early 90s Miata might be your best bet if your stuck on RWD...

BTW, I'm an RWD owner and wonder why with your budget, you're limiting yourself to RWD cars...

I fixed it, goddamn it! 😛

IMO the 240sx is you best bet if you must have an import. The 300zx and mkIII supra engines are alright, surpa blows headgaskets, but have lots of 80s electronic dodads that will be falling apart about now. Miatas are really nice but atleast around here you aren't going to find one for under $3k unless its a POS or has really high miles. I'd rather have a 5.0l mustang oh wait I do 😉.

Oh yeah rx7 = not reliable

Stick to the thread! I won't touch anything that is more than 4 cylinders.

Add to list:
Infiniti J30
MR2
240SX
Miata

Then I guess you won't be touching the V6 J30 😉

It would be pretty silly to cross-shop two cars as different as a Miata and a J30 anyhow...based solely on the driveline...

More important questions are
- How do you feel about cargo space?
- How many passengers do you want room for?
- What sort of driving appeals to you?

He's not going to find a Spyder under $3k unless it's wrecked..and that still might be tough..

😛

Anyway..what exactly do you want to do with this car?

miata's are a dime a dozen (easy to find), reliable, and fun to drive. ok, you look like a pansy in it, but you probably won't care.

I don't really care about passenger space. It's going to be a cross between daily driver and weekend warrior. It's not going to be the main vehicle. I plan to learn how to drive stick-shift on it and down the road, "rice" it up with some internal engine work.

what about an Aussie car?, we have a lot of decent 6 cylinder and V8's availible for under US$3000. all are RWD(Aussies don't believe in FWD..it's an automotive sin😀), EFI and plenty of 5spds

Mazda3's, Corollas, Astras, etc.

I neversaid that we didn't have FWD, it's just the aussie public prefers RWD cars, smoking up the front wheels is just not natural
the bulk of australian cars are not FWD imports but RWD locally produced sedans, the Ford Falcon and GMH Commodore make up the largest portion of all cars manufactured in Australia

I'm leaning along the lines of the Corolla AE6. Do you guys know how many ponies it makes?

Not enough.

I hope you're not in California. Don't ride the stupid bandwagon.

Seriously, miata is about the only import with a lot of cars on the road that's RWD, can be had for that $3k without being old as crap, and has some decent gas mileage. Fun as hell. You can hang up your man card driving it, but that wasn't a condition of your car purchase.
