My friend's VW Cabriolet '92 has a broken timing belt. How much would you estimate the cost of fixing it in LA, CA area? Is there anything he should look out for with this kinda problem?

TIA

umm if your timing belt goes while the engine is running, be prepared to get a whole new head... I dont know where the $400 figure came from. That might for replacing the timing belt, not for fixing the damage when the belt breaks

Not all cars suffer damage - my '84 Accord had a "non-interference" head, and suffered no damage when I broke the timing belt at 80 MPH.

This means that he won't be able to know the damage unless it gets checked by a mechanic? no DIY way to fix it?

Damn echo. :D

BTW, you won't need a whole new head. Sometimes valves will get bent, but that is it. Valve or two and a piston MAYBE is worst case scenario. Still not good to let them break.

no DIY way to fix it?

Yes, if you are mechanically inclined, and have the following items....

Chilton/Hayes
New Belt
Tools

It isn't just pop it off and on easy, but it can be done. Some cars are more difficult than others, but most can be done in a day.

What do you mean no "DIY" way to fix it? Get a Chilton's manual, follow directions.

1. Find out if you have an interference or non-interference engine. I don't know off hand. Non-interference, then all you need is a new built cost of which is totally dependent on the labor required for your particular car.

2. Interference engine, and it actually caused damage...you are hosed.

3. You can replace a timing belt yourself, but it is not a task for the beginner. You need a belt tensioner, etc.

He would probably know if there were damage - the engine would have made an unholy racket if there were valves smashing into each other. When my Accord's belt broke, there was no drama - the car just stopped going without any untoward noise. If the car has a noninterference engine, he should be able to start it even with the timing belt broken. He could do the work himself - it is not that tough a repair, but is quite time-consuming. He will want to replace the tensioner at the same time as the belt, and many people also make a practice of replacing the water pump when replacing the timing belt.

about much much would the timing belt cost? Assuming that it's a one-size-fits-all thing?

It's not at all a one-size-fits-all thing. The belt itself is cheap. This site has a kit with the belt, tensioner, accessory belts, and other bits for $65, but the belt alone would be much less.

Huh? I'm not making anything up. I am no car guru, but I was able to start my Accord with a broken timing belt. If you say this is not typically the case, then fine, but it was true in my case. Now that I think about it, it is possible that it was just turning over and revving, but not actually starting and running. Sorry, but I don't see that this warrants your personal attack. Why do you have such a hair trigger for anger?

The timing belt runs the valvetrain, how are you gonna start up a car without working valves? The valves control the breathing for combustion.

It's not true in ANY case......there are two possibbilities her:

1) You are a liar
2} You are an idiot

although now that I think of it neither of those possibilities are mutually exclusive so it might be both!

Fine, and I acknowledge that in hindsight I was wrong. That said, I do not appreciate being called an idiot or a liar, because I am neither. I totally fail to understand why people get some combative in these forums - there is no call for that kind of unprovoked personal attack. Bad on me for being wrong, bad on you for making your blanket personal insults against me.

You said something that pointed to you being a liar. You were actually just ignorant, and did not know the correct term. No biggie. Some people here just jump on other's statements.

It is a "biggie" to me, and I take exception to the idea that anything I said justified the blanket assertion that I was a "liar" or an "idiot." To me, integrity is about the MOST important thing a person can have, and it is incredibly rash to just assume someone is lying. Why couldn't Ronstang or Notfred have just asked whether I was remembering correctly, rather than assuming the worst.? I regard "liar" as one of the most insulting terms one can use - you might as well say I am a rapist. It makes me really angry that anyone would assume I was a liar, when I spend every day trying to be anything but that.

Belt will run around $15-25
TIMING TENSIONER $40-50
Water Pump $40-60

Its does not look like it is a interference motor from my books. So replace the water pump(if driven by the belt) and the tensioner.

Alot of ATers are worthless assholes like that. I don't post much any more cause of that.

I've been recently browsing this automotive forum and it's amazing how tolerant and nice everyone is to each other.
