I was a used car lot looking at what they had lying around. The salesman came out, friendly, chatty. We talked about what I was looking for, ok mileage, midsized, 4 door etc, and ...

It turns out he is actually selling his personal car and pitches it to me while he is on the job. He even lets me take it out for a spin, offers to give it to me for 1 or 2 days to test it out, get it inspected by a mechanic. Whatever I want.

It has a few paint scratches, the dash front is a little warped and needs bolted down/replaced (not a big deal) The engine sounds / looks good, he has full maintenance records, second owner of it.

Asking 3800. Ive done a KBB and its north of 5k from what I've seen... seems like a decent deal

edit: any opinions on the 99 contour?

I'd be a little cautious of a used car salesman giving you a "good deal" on his own personal car..... I'd say only two owners and all maintenance records outweigh that possibility.

It's possible he has good intentions...

He offered to let me take it to a mechanic. He mentioned that and offered to let me take it for a few days somtime. He said if he sold it through work he wouldnt make as much because of the dealership would take a certain amount.

Like I said, I have no clue... it seems like a good deal, It drove, braked, handled well. I checked all of the electrical (power) systems.

This is something i would DEFINITELY have checked out first..

if nothing else it was a funny story :)

Yeah, I would be wary if it was a hot deal.

Looking for something to replace the 1990 olds... still tempted to go with a 350z

On the other hand I went and looked at all the new hondas... element isnt bad, accord is nice.... I really dislike the feel on these clutches....

THe s1000 or whatever is nice looking, but 33k, wth are they thinking

This is for an 85 mile commute, each way, 5 days a week :)

I also drove a nice grand prix, 2004, 36k miles at 15k :-/

No clue... i dont know if they are reliable at all or what
They aren't. And they are expensive to fix. There's a really good reason that Ford only made the for a few years.

Edit:
<-----worked at the largest Ford dealership in the Southeast for over 15 year. Contours are easily the worst car Ford has made in the last 25 years.
