YACT: '97 Subaru Legacy GT w/200K & rebuilt engine

Hey all,

Just got a used Subaru Legacy GT wagon AWD. It has the 2.5L flat four. The car has almost 202,000 miles on it, but the engine was rebuilt like 10,000-20,000 miles ago. the first oil change with me is coming up soon and I wanted some opinions. I would like not to have to baby this car TOO much, mind you I'm not going to race it everywhere, but what is the best oil choice?

*Regular "high mileage"
*Regular/Synthetic Blend
*Full Synthetic

Am I missing any types of oil?

Suggestions/comments/concerns?

Don't they make a "high mileage synthetic" too? I'd guess that is just BS....

My Subaru dealer puts Castrol GTX High Mileage in my car--I think its a synthetic blend.

I have a '96 GT with approx 120k miles, original engine.

edit: nm, its not a blend, its standard motor oil.

Full synthetic is the best but unless you plan to keep it another 200k+ miles which would mean rebuilding everything else at some point I'd just save some money and run regular. If you want to go for extended time without changing the oil then synthetic is the way to go.

quaker state full synth is what I am going to use once I rebuild my motor.

I'm truly not sure if there is a difference between the high mileage/older car oil vs. the regular stuff

I'm planning to keep this car for another 2 years, maybe 3. NOT wanting to have to rebuild or place the engine. Guess synthetic is the way to go *looks at wallet and cries*

If the engine can't make it 2 or 3 years on regular oil it certainly isn't going to make it on synthetic either. I'd be more worried about the tranny, awd crap, suspension, and electronics. Save your synthetic oil money and have all the rest of the fluids changed if they haven't been done recently.

all maintenance on the car was done on time & at the dealer, all at the same dealer and mostly same mechanic in fact. engine was rebuilt at the dealership

but that is a good point. i'm not WORRIED about the engine, just wanting to protect it as well as possible. guess i'll price some stuff out

Amsoil Synthetic is the best of the best, though oil changes tend to cost me around $30 for parts alone.($6 per quart!)
Mobil 1 is second best.
Then I use Purolator premium plus oil filter. Filters very well, built very strongly and is cheap.

Got the filter down no prob, found a place that sells Wix here. Just gotta decide how much I want to plunk down for oil

save your money for the other stuff that might break on a car with that many miles.
