YACT: 5 qts of oil instead of 4....

When I had my oil changed about 1000 miles ago they put in 5qts instead of 4. Is this okay? Maybe I should get ramps...

no, it isnt ok. Why dont you check the dipstick. Overfilling leads to frothing the oil and an oil pump cant pump froth.

you should be able to get out alittle less than a quart by just removing the oil filter. Not too much more should come out.

The oil pan will be directly beneath your engine. There will be a bolt on the bottom/side of this plain as day. Unscrew this bolt and let some of the oil drain out. Be careful, because with 5 quarts of oil in the engine, will make a mess.

Edit: I like iamwiz82's idea better. Just unscrew the oil filter.

Well I don't have ramps. But if I thought it was worth it, I would have to buy some with a shallow angle that would fit under my chin spoiler.

Over filling can cause you to blow out seals as well.
You can just pull the filter and drain it, they usually hold close to a quart (Depending on the size of the filter or course).

Rhino Ramps $(30) are the best and fit under Vettes and T/As 😀 but why not just go back to the garage or another place? Cheapest all the way around. Just make sure they dont add another quart after they replace the filter. 🙂

OK, again for the slow among us. ANOTHER PLACE. A lot cheaper than buying ramps, a filter wrench, a socket wrench to use the filter wrench with, a filter and a drain pan. Guess as obtuse as you have been I guess I better tell you not to just let it drain out on the ground.

BTW, have you mentioned the make and model of car and engine?? A 4 or 6 may have the filter on the side, not under the car.

Reasons to get it done someplace:

1. Bad for engine.
2. Cheaper.
3. You cant fit under car
4. You have no mechanical aptitude.

5. If I dont stop laughing at this soon my stomach is going to burst.

I don't know, maybe i'm just used to being around guys who at least knows how to change oil and oil filter.

Of course most of my buds are gearheads so I find it bit strange whenever I see a guy who don't

know how to unscrew oil filter.


As for Filter, yes just unscrew it and let the oil drain and turn the filter unside down to drain the oil.

Make sure you have a oil pan to catch the oil and be sure engine is cooled off because filter can get pretty hot.

Why do you feel the need to insult my intelligence because I know different things than you? Has it ever occurred to you that not everyone has the fortune of experience working with cars? How the hell would I know that a filter wrench is needed to remove the filter? I don't want to go to a mechanic if I can do it myself. Pardon me for trying to learn something.
I'm 18 and I've only had my car for 4 months, and it's my first car. I've never changed an oil filter in my life. Why would I have?

My car is a 1995 240sx and I know the filter is on the side of the engine because I have seen it.

Edit: Btw, I think I will get a filter wrench, and as for the socket wrench, I need a set of tools here anyway so I might as well get it.
