YACT: $20K to spend on a new car

I'm looking to trade in my current car for something new. I've got a budget of ABOUT $20K. (Give or take a little is fine). My preference is NOT to buy something brand new off the lot - I'd rather buy it a few years old and let someone take the first depreciation hit.

Requirements:

No domestics
Four doors with room for 4 adults to be comfortable
Reasonably sporty - A bit of pep and fair handling
Quiet, comfortable ride
Well-built car
Reliable
Good ameneties - Leather, sunroof, etc.
Safe

Things I've ruled out thus far:

Anything Toyota (just don't like them)
Cheap imports (Kia, Hyundai, etc.)

Cars I'm considering:

2000-2002 Maxima
2000-2002 Accord (EX)
1998-2000 BMW 5 series
1999-2000 BMW 3 series

Thoughts? Other ideas?

If you look at german/swedish cars, be prepared to have high upkeep. Personally, I would go with a japanese car such as Honda, Toyota, or even Nissan. Subaru is another good brand too.

in socal, i was looking at cars for my roomate, you can get something like a 2000 bmw 323ci with leather and power etc, for abotu 15k used with maybe 70-80k miles on it. just look at craigslist for your area if you live in a large metro area.

with 20k, and the use of carsdirect.com you could get an accord v6 sedan. a new one.

Has anyone here used carsdirect, if so, how was the experience?

Go for a V6 Honda. Those BMWs, contrary to popular thought, are not really the most reliable cars you can get. Assuming you would be able to find one for $20k. BMWs are also known to nickle and dime you for the 3 series so it would probably be hard to find a 2000 3 series for $20k. Who knows, maybe you can, but for the money vs. reliability you would be better off with a Honda.

With $20k, can't you get a new Mazda 6?

well i just realized he said used car, but with the huge discounts on camry and accord v6, you could always looking into getting a new one. i was wrong though , i guess the cheapest 05 v6 accord is 21600 or so carsdirect. a camry v6 (though ik now he doesnt want one) was 20k though. camry = not popular.

ive never used cars direct, but my old boss used it before to get a mazda protege a couple years back. he just put up the car he wanted, and dealers just lined up basically to get him a car like what he wanted, with the cars direct price. like a week later he just drove to that dealer at the price that was pre agreed upon and picked up his new car.

Put that $20k on a brand new corvette! Your paymetns would be still low if you go with the 6 year payment plan. And think about all that pootang you would be gettin! 🙂
