The STI has a different transmission than the regular WRX. It is bulletproof as long as you aren't doing clutch dumps at 6k rpms.

Trouble with removing the rear spoiler is there are something like 16 holes in the trunk lid once the wing is off. Best bet is to swap trunk lids with a regular WRX and have it re-keyed. You could buy a factory WRX trunklid and have it painted but this would cost about a grand going with factory parts.

Get an 05+ Legacy GT. 250HP, 0-60 5.3, roomy & nice inside. Not as sporty as the STI, but with a few $K in suspension mods will handle on rails.

The GTO isn't very practical, esp if you want room for four. The trunk is tiny and it is a pain to get people in & out of the back, even worse on an 04 as the seat motors are slower. Fun as hell tho :D

Get the Altima 3.5SE in a manual tranny, and just upgrade the suspension. That is all folks.... move along 8)

the STI drivetrain is rock solid. It's very rare for the transmission to have problems, and most of the time its the rear diff that ends up on the losing side not the transmission. The 6spd is rather desirable to anyone with a WRX because it can handle a lot of power, way more than the stock STI can put out.

The 5spds are the tricky ones, not terribly strong and possible to break using stock power if driven incorrectly.

I'd say go for it! Sounds like a good deal

As for the clutch. Thats questionable. If the previous owner was launching it all the time then yeah you'l probably need another one eventually. As for cost, well someone in my area just did his own for roughly 500 bucks. Thats Subaru genuine parts, and doing the work himself. However he bought: clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel, and release bearing. You may or may not need all those items, but they autocross the car a lot so he did it all.

oh yeah, i forgot to remind you to check the insurance rates before you buy, and make sure you can handle it. the WRX costs an f-ing insane amount of money to insure. figure about $600 more a year than any other car anywhere near the price. even the S2000 is about $600 less a year.

as far as I know you can let the rear seat down, I can check tomorrow. Also depending on your insurer the may just list the WRX Impreza, not the specific models, meaning it wouldn't be that high.

Impreza sedans don't have folding seats as far as I recall, they have a pass through for skis. A good reason they need to bring over STi wagons:)

Yep. Rear seats don't fold down, pass-through only.

It's all but confirmed at this point that there will be an STi hatch/wagon for the 08 total redesign, but those won't go on sale until later next year. Expect the new Impreza to look a lot like the current gen Legacy except a little smaller.

Meh, give me back the GF/GC/GM days, a lot of flavor there. Even the bug eyes were unique compared to all the others on the road.

Heh... you're the first person to ever notice. Yes, some stupid soccer mom backed into me in a parking lot and the entire left rear quarter was replaced. It was a low speed hit, and there was no damage beyond cosmetic. That picture is about a year-and-a-half old, and only about 6 months after the incident. The paint has now aged and blended so that you can't tell anymore.

The torque and power spread of that 2.0TFSI engine is amazing, it always has power on tap.

Unless you're a hardcore driver - in which case you probably wouldn't seek advice here - the GTI would be more fun, day in day out, than an STi. Really, can't go wrong with that car.
Can you say slow? The STi and GTO have way more power across the band than that overweight, electrical nightmare piece of German scheisse.
