2000 Mazda 626 LX - 54,000 miles - $5000
or
1998 Honda Accord EX V6 - 66,000 miles - $8000

Which one is better buy for reliability(next 3 years)?

since neither is still under warranty, i'd go for the honda. but the choice isn't so clear since the 626 is newer, has fewer miles, and is less expensive.

Both will go for the long haul when taken care of properly.
My friend(ex girl) has a 1993 626 with 200K on it, still kicking along fine.

The last two generations of the 4banger 626, while reliable, was/is a horrible car to drive.

Underpowered and a rattle trap.

I have the earlier style (1997) as a work beater with over 200k on it. The GF's mother has the last style 626 and it didn't improve. Both cars rattle like a baby's toy and are seriously underpowered. I HATE driving mine, but it wont die. But be prepared to replace the tranny. The stock Ford trannies die after 70k or so.

You'll do much better with the Honda if it's in good shape.

With the accord being over 60,000 miles be prepared to do the 60K maintainence on it. Change timing belt, water pump, seals, etc... Not sure what the Mazda recommends at 60K miles. My old Ford Contour had a timing chain which doesn't need to be replaced as often as a belt. Also I believe it was a non-interference type engine so even if it did break, I wouldn't be replacing the whole engine unlike the Honda. My wife's 96 Accord is getting that full treatment as we speak. It has 140K miles on it with original everything. We're VERY lucky nothing happened so far. Don't procrastinate like we did, although we were lucky, you may not be.

The same. He's in the same boat no matter what he picks. But maybe, just maybe, the Honda already had it's 60K service. Ask for service records.
