YACGT(yet another cheap gas thread) so, you pass a gas station . . .

and WOW, gas is $1.97 per gallon. WOWSERs and you realize you need gas, then you see another gas station 1/4 mile down the road and it's $2.08 / gallon. cheaper than average but not like that $1.97 / gallon.

let's say it's a limited access road and you'd have to make 2 U turns, 1 to turn around and another to get you on the southbound side of the road to get to the gas station.

it's going take you and extra 5 to 8 minutes to go back to the cheaper gas station.

do you go back or do you fill up at $2.08?

None of the above....

I'd go further down the road and see if I find something cheaper or at $2.08 (I would realize it's too late to turn back)

depends on how much gas I need. difference of $0.11 per gallon, I would need a full 20 gallons or so to waste 5-8 minutes, but I would make a mental note of the location of the cheaper one.

ok, i saw one place driving home today that was $2.18 most other places are $2.25 and up.

but to be honest, i wouldn't even think about it if it was $.07 difference or less.

even at $0.11 difference i still wouldn't go back.

ya, i'd definitely make a mental note. 😉

Consider how much gas it is going to take to go to the cheaper one.

There's an arco on one corner near me, and a shell on the other. Quite often, the arco is $0.05 to $0.10 cheaper, but why do I still go to the shell often?

17 gallons is what I usually fill up, so that means there is a $0.85-$1.70 difference for the tank.
#1: The arco costs $0.45 to use the ATM. This reduces it to $0.40-$1.25
#2: The shell has shorter lines, meaning I'm not waiting as long (partially because of the easier payment setup)
#3: The shell has pleanty of windshild cleaning supplies, with cleaner water
#4: To get to the arco from where I usually am at (a restraunt nearby), I have to come across a 3 lane road with two left turn lanes to get to the inner most one, do a U-turn, and then turn right onto another three lane road afterwards and go back through that busy intersection. The shell requires driving past an arby's (not even going on the road) and pulling upto the pump. And then just turning right once to be on my way.

In your case, you're gonna blow a gallon of gas just getting to the cheaper station, then back to where you decided to turn around, which eliminates ANY savings.

exactly, that's why i'm asking the question. 😉

A gallon of gas in 5 minutes? What do you drive, a military tank?

that's what i did do, ended up at home with very little gas in the tank.

saw a place $2.19 / gallon, pretty good, then it went up 2.21, 2.25, 2.23, 2.30, then at a gas station that is normally very high it was 2.19, dayum i missed it because i don't normally check that one and didn't see it till too late.

so now i'm home with the gas light on my car on. 🙁

1/4 of a mile.... Probably end up saving 50 cents in the end, but I'd go back just to send the message to the other company to lower their prices.

5-8 minutes. Meaning 5-10 miles, plus 5-10 miles to get back to where you are at. So that puts you at 10-20 miles. My car gets 17-18MPG. Thus, approximately a gallon of gas.

Yes I would turn around and go back to the cheaper one solely on principle. If enough people do that, the higher priced guy will be forced to lower his price too. And then it will have a ripple effect on all the surrounding gas stations in the area. I'd rather be gouged with a teaspoon than a shovel.

I love it when there's a gas station here that's quite a bit cheaper than the one across the street. People line up 10 cars in a row at each pump to save 10c/L. I go and pay more, but I'm in and out in 4 minutes, while they're waiting for 35 minutes 😛

In that case, go to an expensive gas station and get $5 worth of gas😉

The Shell gas station next to the Costco I shop at recently switched to Chevron, which is what I fill my cars up on. Down to $2.49 Regular now. I filled up $25 for an exact 10.004 gallon of gas yesterday. Doesn't matter which gas station is cheaper, I only fill up on 1 brand, even though I know most of the gas stations use the same regular gas. *shrug*
