YACAT: Crossover/Filter question

I've got a ghetto Sony HU pushing 20Wx4 with two 6.5"s in the front. Rear is empty.

I plan to get an amp+sub for the trunk and tap into the rear speakers (amp has high-level input) for signal.

Now, the amp will keep those nasty highs away from my sub - but the front speakers will still be trying to push bass, thereby muddying their ability to put out clearer mid/upper at higher volumes.

Is there anything I can do about this (cheap 2-channel filter?) or do I just suck it up until I can afford a real setup?

You can make your own hi-pass filter, or you can buy cheapos that you just wire inline with the speaker wire going to each speaker.

Approximate cost of build vs buy?

There's a website somewhere that tells you how to make them, but basically all you need are certain size caps or inductors depending on the frequencies you want to block. It was some sort of basic electronics for car audio website, something like that.

Should be really cheap to build one, for what you want to do.

Coolness. I'll get my Google on and see what I can find.

It's a tape deck. I'm lucky enough that it's got line-level inputs. Otherwise that'd be the first thing to go.

low end sony h/u's, <300$ are HORRIBLE headunits. sq is crap, everything on them is crap (yes, friend had one, went from that to pioneer, NIGHT AND DAY)

very easy to make your own x-overs. however, if you want, you could check out

http://partsexpress.com and see if they have one you need, most likely they do.

but, since you want something nice, i would reccomend a behringer deq2946 very good price for what you get, just will need to have someone convert it to DC powersupply (not much) ;)

i cant wait till i get out of my SPL craze, and get some money up and get a real SQ car going.

M4H, you got NOTHING, on my resonant tests, hehe, and my new sub will be louder :D o, and monster garage taped a db drag racing event today, in cleveland (ehh, 17x db's is about what they got, dont know results yet)

You can make your own crossover, its not all that difficult. But, it would probably be eaiser to just buy a pre fab unless you plan on going for a decent quality system.
Parts Express Your DIY haven for all thats good (of average quality)
Your PE bass blockers

Now, about making your own. You can do a crossover pretty simple if you keep it first or second order. Hell, first order would be a breeze.
Loudspeakers101 Your X-O haven for how to
LS101 X-O section All you wanted to know about X-O's

Most websites will be quite similiar to what LS101 has. The formulas dont change so.... Hell, even PA has a X-O calcutaor, or at least I chart IIRC. Thing is when you do your own you (and this is optional) have the choice of selecting slope, crossover point and crossover type. Theres like 8 or 10 different crossover types I know of, and each performs slightly differently. Once you select type you choose your X-O point then a slope of the X-O. As I understand it the type of crossover also plays a role in how the slope works. So, their all interrelated.
Madisound Your DIY avergae to high end haven
Solen Another DIY average to high end haven
Zalytron ANOTHER DIY avergae to high end haven

Once you've plotted out your crossover you get to select components for the making. The cap/resistor type also plays a role in how it will function. Certain caps/resistors work better then other. Some work much better. Polyprolyne I believe are the good ones. These parts can range from under a buck apeice to upwards of 50 to 100 bucks APEICE for the same value component. So, you could build a simple 2nd order X-O for under 5 bucks, or go upwards of 100 just depending on how high end you choose to go with your component selection.

Enjoy :)

You bumped this for that? :p :D

All I need to do now is find or build a good 10" wedge box so that the spare tire isn't blocked.

aren't you just looking for some bass blockers?

Text

I have some bass blockers in my car and the front 4 speakers play high notes very good while my 2 12" subs take care of the bass.
