I've got some extra spending money from my birthday, and I've got a little bit stashed here and there. I've got a pretty decent PC to run games on, but I want to get back into more sports, racing, and arcade style games. I also want to be able to have my fiancee play some football or hockey against me as well.

Splinter Cell, Panzer Dragoon, Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance, Mortal Kombat-DA, Halo, and Sega Gt2002 all look like great games. I'm not all into the metroid, mario, and zelda games that are only available on the gamecube, so there goes the gamecubes big advantage.

I guess it comes down to the X-box and the PS2. I like the sony controllers better, but from what I can tell, the Xbox has better graphics and has some great games out for it. Outside of GTA3 & Gran Turismo, the PS2 doesn't seem to have a ton of exclusive titles to it. I like the idea of the Xbox Live, and I like that you don't have to have memory cards for it.

Soooo...outside of comments like "Microsoft sucks, or Xbox sucks, or Sony or Nintendo roXor's your boXors", is there any reason *not* to purchase it? Is the Xbox future undecided? Will Microsoft release the Xbox2 shortly and drop all support for the first one? Is there a major lack of games for the Xbox?

Yeh, I'm sure that there are plenty of threads out there covering these topics...but I'm lazy :) I searched and couldn't find anything fairly recent that wasn't talking about specific games.

I have one and love it. I can't give you a reason not to buy one.

Xbox live rocks, BTW. :D

Any reason *not* to buy an Xbox?

Other than you already own a gaming rig?

Late 2005 is expected release date for both the PS3 and XBox2 (or whatever they plan on calling it) - if you don't mind waiting 2 years then don't buy an XBox now :)

MS is also rumored to introduce a slightly slimmer XBox at E3 (just a rumor) - the XBox now is a little bulky and heavy, which may be an issue if you take it around with you a lot or it's going into a confined space or you want it to match your home stereo equipment.

I'm a playstation 2 kinda guy and my friend has xbox. A game came out for xbox I wanted to try so we traded for a while. The graphics are pretty decent, but the controller has too many buttons. I found my fingers getting tired after just a few minutes of play. Its hard to control everything when the controller is held in both your hands. At least with a computer say, the keyboard is resting and you have free movement around it. The Playstation 2 has stuck with the 4 top buttons and 4 in the back of the controller and I find that much better. From my experience, I wouldn't buy an xbox if someone gave me the money to do it.

Get the Xbox 1.5. Same system... smaller chassis... cheaper should be out by summer.. early summer.

Sony also will make a PS2.5 slated to come out the same time (cheaper too)

Nintendo... well umm can it get any smaller? :p :)

I've got a *decent* gaming rig. Nothing special. I just want to be able to play some fun two(or more) player games from the comfort of the couch. Really tough to do with just one gaming machine tucked away in the corner of a spare bedroom. There also aren't a lot of racing/fighting/sports games available for the PC.

Smaller one this summer eh? Well, size doesn't matter much *snicker*. I've got an an entertainment center that I can just slide the console under when it's not in use.

Just curious (I really don't know), is there a racing game for the Xbox that's as good as Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec for the PS2? Is Sega GT 2002 a racing game? I don't own a console but I've played GT3 at a friend's and I really liked it.

I haven't owned a console since the Sega Genesis but splurged and bought an Xbox and a Gamecube. I am having a blast with both.

But since Xbox is your question, I'll stick to that. The two games that I play the most are NFL 2k3 and EA NCAA Football 2003. Both games rock and since it looks like you're a football fan, I highly recommend them. Splinter Cell is pretty much self explanatory, the gameplay is awesome and I personally think does have some replay value like trying different things to beat missions.

The only think that annoys me is the black and white buttons. I have the new S controller but I still find it awkward to have to bend my thumb all the way down to find the buttons. And for whatever reason they are not elevated like A,B,X,and Y are also. So for the football games especially, I always find myself missing the black button when I try to pass to the guy that you have to press the black button to pass to.

If you like FPS games, I personally have had a little trouble getting used to using two joysticks on the controller as opposed to the keyboard/mouse combo on a PC. I'm getting the hang of it though and now it's getting pretty easy.

Overall, I've been having a blast with it and can't wait to pick up some more titles. Haven't played MK series since Genesis either so I want to get my hands on Deadly Alliance eventually also.

Like mentioned, the Xbox should be supported til 2005ish so hopefully many more great games to come

I have mine sitting on my entertainment center rack. It isn't the prettiest thing in the world but I'm more concerned about what is on the screen than what the rack looks like.

Someone posted a good deal, from Wal-Mart I think, in the Hot Deals Xbox thread where you can get another game free on top of JSRF and SegaGT that comes with the package now.

Well if you don't like good graphics, and maybe if you hate microsoft then that could be a reason, and if you didn't have money that would be another. But if none of those are true then get an xbox, it already sounds like you have made up your mind about it.

One of the reasons I'm somewhat interested in a console is because I have a problem actually following through and finishing games. I loose interest quickly. Especially in the fighting/arcade type of games. That's where rentals and a large used market comes into play nicely. There's a much larger rental and used game market on consoles. I can rent a game for a week for a few bucks and have fun. I'm not out $40 or $50 on it like I am with a PC game.

If I remember correctly, isn't Collin McRae 3(or however you spell it) coming out shortly?

Xbox is a GREAT buy! Go for it.
If you have broadband, Xbox Live is a worthy investment.

Some of the best games on Xbox:

HALO
Splinter Cell
Dead or Alive 3
Dead or Alive: XBV
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Project Gotham Racing
Rallisport Challenge
Sega GT 2002
JSRF
Morrowind
STEEL BATTALION :D

The best Live capable games:

MECHASSAULT!!! :D
MotoGP
Ghost Recon
Unreal Championship (much lag tho)
(I don't play sports games, altho my buddies tell me they rock too)

BTW: Be sure and check out the BIG LIST - Xbox Deals thread over in Hot Deals.
