Question was basically in the topic description but I guess I'll entertain you all with a little backstory. Basically, I dunno, things just arn't working out here. I came in (out of state, top 5 university for the major) thinking I was hot ******, and came out a much, much more humbled person. My grades have been suffering & I'm doing pretty poorly even now (midway through finals week). Its based on a lot of things but thats an emo-ridden path I'm not going to subject you all to. Bottom line its my fault though and I'll accept responsibility for it. Heck as it is right now, I'm not even sure I can make it off probation (yeah, I took the hardest classes I could find when I got put on probation, I told you I was a prideful piece of poo), which at my university will get you dropped, I think.

Regardless, I was pretty much thinking about going back home, attending community college in my area (Northern Virginia, its one of the better community colleges) for a year or two, and then transfering out to Virginia Tech, hopefully (closer to home, good network of friends I can fall back on... a lot of what happened this year was because I honestly felt like I had nowhere to turn sometimes when I needed help- I know this is not the case (TA's) but sometimes you just need peers you can turn to). I'm not willing to believe that one year of mistakes determines the rest of your life. I'm actually not too stressed at this point, I think community college would be good for me. It lets me stay at home, classes are cheap, NoVA has pretty good ties with Virginia Tech, I could get a job, heck, could even learn how to cook in my free time (always wanted to do that, can't really do it in a university 700 miles away in the middle of the cornfields). Maybe the money I save will even in some way make up for how much I'm wasting coming out here (current college).

...

Er, that was a tad long wasn't it. Anyways, my question now is- if I go ahead and attend community college in my area, do I have to transfer the credits over from my current university? Reading over my grade situation above, it really would be easier just to start over as a freshman (yeah yeah 5 years of college, whatever, college is fun) than try to salvage whats left of my GPA after this year. It seems rather cheesy though (um, keep redoing freshman year?), so I don't know. I understand grades/probation/drop status will still show on my transcript but I could probably explain it away based on circumstances when I apply to Virginia Tech a year or two down the road, assuming I do really well at NoVA. So...

1) Can I simply not transfer credit to community college?
2) Am I deluding myself and I'm just screwed & my life is over? If so, I guess i'll go grab the orange peeler and sing along to Simple Plan. And then step in front of a bus.
3) Thanks for reading

Edit: Staying at home (community college) would also let me take care of my two younger sisters, drive them places (both parents work, and both sisters do a LOT of extracurriculars), keep an eye on potential boyfriends (youngest is about to enter high school), etc.

Also, no, I don't intend to stay in my current major. I'm thinking more along the lines of Business (finance?) major, and engineering & english minors.

your GPA doesn't transfer. Mine didn't anyway. Just the course credit.....if it DOES transfer for you, why not just apply as a student...if you don't send the transcripts, they can't count the courses..

Your GPA will reset when you go to community college, and reset again when you go to Virginia Tech. The only thing you have to worry about is getting into VT.

Grades don't transfer. You'll transfer only whether you passed or failed. So if you are on probation for Cs and Ds, you may be just fine. However, things would be different if you are on probation for Fs.

I suppose you could try to not transfer classes. I've never thought of it before.

It looks like you just need direction in life. A major and two minors is not direction. Minors are basically worthless wastes of time for most people.

Ah lol, I passed plenty, i'm on probation for an F in chem I can easily retake and pass (don't ask, like i said, mistake.. /wrists etc.).

Regarding getting into VT, it shouldn't be too bad. I'm reasonably sure (again, this is after being ridiculously humbled) I can maintain a prety good GPA at NoVA, and I did get into VT originally out of high school, I just opted for the more prestigious name instead (again, prideful piece of poo). Um... when they see I was dropped from my current college that might raise some eyebrows but I think I could explain it away.

Regarding direction, I think I've either found it this year or a year or two at home will help me find it. Also, the minors represent fields of interest- I don't expect it to mean anything except personally. I <3 engineering & english, but (obviously) can't hack a major in engineering, and don't see a future in english. Business may or may not work. I'll figure it out soon :p

Changing won't hurt you; in fact, it sounds like you have thought it through pretty well and realize it will be beneficial. One lousy year won't scar you for life. My second semester freshman year grades were withdraw, withdraw, withdraw, withdraw and F. Top that!

Nothing transfers unless you initiate the process. There's no behind-the-scenes automatic clearinghouse that pushes your record around to different colleges. If you apply at your community college and say nothing, they'll take you as a freshman and your other college record just fades into the sunset.

Go to a small college for your BS and large college with a good name for your masters. Thats what I did and it work very well.

Yeah, Virginia Tech would be the "small college" and a larger college we'll see about later (preferably after some work experience perhaps). NoVA (community college) I guess is just to redeem myself to .. myself. That and after being dropped from my current college I can't just go up to Va Tech and be like "hey I got in from high school last year but I got dropped from the college I did choose to go to, take me back pls? lol. I'd rather back it up with a solid year or two at a respected community college in the region (again, NoVA and Va Tech have pretty strong ties).

Hmm.. so at this point, if I do decide to transfer credits, what happens? I have an F in a class last semester & I have a final in another class i'm failing in this semester (hence not getting out of probation) in about an hour. However, theres a crapload of credits that would definately speed things up at NoVA. Bunch of gen-eds... English (4 on AP Lang & Comp, 5 on AP Lit & Comp, 780 verbal), History (Western Civ. 1660-present, also a 4 on AP US Hist.), Math (Calc I), Physics (Mechanics), Econ (Micro & Macro), etc. Basically a solid years worth of credit.

I was planning & willing to go through possibly 2 years at NoVA to get gen-eds out of the way (again) and do some harder classes before applying to Virginia Tech, but if I can transfer the credits for all those (since the GPA doesn't transfer apparently?), I could take some higher level courses at NoVA instead and apply to Va Tech after a year & start working on a major. How do the failing courses apply though? Just no credit/no grade because I technically didn't recieve any credit for them? or would I have to retake? In which case I probably wouldn't go through them again because they were classes required by a major I'm trying to get out of... and I struggled enough through those without trying to retake them for no reason.

Bump for update:

Just applied to NoVA (community college) as a "new student". Is it possible just to transfer high school credits and pretend last year didn't exist? >_<. I realize its like being a freshman all over again but at this point thats ok.
