He sure is a cute thing. How long do they live? My only problem with having rodents as pets is they don't live long and I get extremely attached to my animals. My pet Fox Squirrel died when she was only 3 years old and it was very hard on me.

They live for 15-20 years and in rare cases up to 30 years. 🙂

They are really fun curious little guys. Like a bunny but with spunk and personality.

He's such a cutie, I caught him hugging or humping his little chinchilla stuffed animal friend. He has been dragging the little doll around but it keeps getting stuck in the tubes.

how much was your total cost for everythin?

cage, dust, toys, beds, Dexter = 300 even roughly. Could be a lot less, that cage was spensive.

Food, dust and bedding last several months too.

Wow, I've been reading up on chinchillas over the last hour or so (Google search FTW). I admit it, I've kind of taken to yours and was curious as to what is really involved in caring for one.

While most articles claim that they are fairly low maintenance, it really doesn't seem that way! They are evidently very sensitive to temperature and moisture, and require activity outside of the cage, occasionally. They also have a propensity to chew on wires and baseboards if not supervised. Furthermore, they evidently need a "dust bath" every couple of days to keep their fur in check.

That said, they sure are cute lil' fellers. I'm glad you're enjoying yours.

Yeah, that critter's cage is pimpin'! It's actually much nicer looking than the pictures of cages I came across while perusing the various articles on chinchillas.

post count goes up by post, not thread...so even if you just had 1 thread and all these posts, you'd still get the post count +1

we have one, ChiChi...she is quite the midnight rambler...makes big ole mess also...but she is quite cute and a point of fascination for the cats..
