its a serious question guys...I am trying to figure out if I have to keep buying the super expensive kitten food, or if I can switch to the moderately expensive regular food

IMO, 7 months. That's about when they reach their full height but haven't yet filled out yet (that can be up to 2 years depending on breed).

thanks....my 2 cats are starting to get pretty fat....I am thinking I need to change their diet

The kitten food should tell you on the back of it...

Generally, it's up to one year old that it's considered a "kitten" but as long as the food as 30% protein it should be good for kittens. "Kitten" food typically is in smaller bites to make it easier for them to chew.
